Here's a run-down of the past week's events for area teams, including games from Dec. 2-8. WSU football The Cougars returned to the gridiron for the first time in 22 days at a fan-less Coliseum in Los Angeles to take on USC Sunday. • Winter outdoor activities in Lincoln County

    Drew Lawson, The Times|Updated Jan 20, 2021

DAVENPORT – If one doesn't mind freezing their tails off, there are several enjoyable spots for winter hunting and fishing in Lincoln County, even as temperatures begin to plummet and some animals go into hibernation. "By far" the most popular seasonal outdoor activity is fishing at Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area, Fish and Wildlife Officer Curt Wood said. He said the water bodies there don't typically freeze over, so ice fishing isn't always an option, but added that...

  • Area sports roundup-Dec. 24 issue

    Drew Lawson, The Times|Updated Dec 23, 2020

Compiled by Drew Lawson The Times Many area sports teams enjoyed victories in the last week, some of which were marquee triumphs. Two men's basketball teams and one women's basketball team have yet to be defeated this year, while other teams are on their way to successful seasons. Then, there's Cougars football. Oh well, there's always next year, right? To quote a friend and die-hard Wazzu fan: "Maybe it's a good thing the Apple Cup was cancelled." At least, this year Coug fan...

  • Finding new Christmas traditions

    Drew Lawson|Updated Dec 17, 2020

In my family, tradition is king when it comes to Christmas. Whether it's eating donuts and drinking hot chocolate (or "special" hot chocolate, when you turn 21) while decorating the tree or watching Tom Hanks play 748 roles in "The Polar Express" at 6 a.m. on Christmas Day (that tradition died when everyone became a teenager), part of the allure of the holidays is its reliable traditions. But sometimes, finding new traditions or trying new things is good practice for the holid...

    Drew Lawson, The Times|Updated Dec 17, 2020

Compiled by Drew Lawson for The Times This week saw more wins, losses, COVID-19 cancellations and unexpected circumstances take place for local sports teams. Perhaps the strangest COVID-related occurrence occurred in the PAC-12, when the Washington Huskies had to withdraw from the PAC-12 football championship due to rising case numbers. They were replaced by the Oregon Ducks, who will take on USC in the title game Friday, while other PAC-12 schools will play regular season gam...

  • Wilbur receives donated fire truck

    Drew Lawson, The Times|Updated Dec 4, 2020

WILBUR – The donation of a fire truck to the fire district that serves the Wilbur area will replace an outdated vehicle in the district's fleet. The 2001 Central States truck donated by the Airway Heights Fire Department has replaced an outdated 1968 engine Fire District No. 7 was using. The newer truck is a welcome upgrade, especially in light of the challenges with the Whitney fire this fall. The fire that started Labor Day weekend consumed over 120,000 acres in Lincoln C...

  • Lincoln County options have become limited for a post-Christmas purge

    Drew Lawson, The Times|Updated Dec 4, 2020

DAVENPORT – Christmas is a time for cheer, a time to be merry, a time to be with loved ones …and a time to acquire more new items than one needs. Inevitably, the influx of holiday gifts prompts many to look at donating or throwing away their old items. In Lincoln County, places for carrying out this sort of holiday purge are rather limited compared to a larger county, but options still exist. Still functioning despite the COVID-19 pandemic and tucked a couple blocks behind Safeway in Davenport lies the Lincoln County Car...

  • Reardan school board approves replacement levy

    Drew Lawson, The Times|Updated Nov 28, 2020

REARDAN – The school board approved a replacement educational programs and operations levy of $2.00 per $1,000 of assessed property value at its Nov. 18 meeting. The levy will go on the ballot for a vote Feb. 9, 2021. The three-year levy would be a decrease from the current rate of $2.08 per $1,000 of assessed property value. However, the $2.00 figure is an educated estimation detailing the total ask, which is what voters will be deciding on, according to school staff. The replacement levy, which would take over for the p...

    Drew Lawson, The Times|Updated Nov 28, 2020

OLYMPIA – As state leaders and legislators prepare to deal with a budget gap in 2021, members of Fish and Wildlife know cuts could be coming to their department, but exact cuts won’t be unknown until Gov. Jay Inslee’s budget is released. Fish and Wildlife spokesperson Staci Lehman and Officer Curt Wood, who monitors Lincoln County, both said budget cuts could be a reality due to lost revenue from shutdowns in spring 2020, but what those cuts would look like remains to be seen until the governor’s budget comes out and the sta...

  • Athletes adjust to practices during the pandemic

    Drew Lawson, The Times|Updated Nov 5, 2020

LINCOLN COUNTY – Davenport and Reardan student-athletes had to wait seven months until practices could resume in any fashion. Now, sports camps have been occurring since October, but these practices look far stranger than normal. Throw that in with the fact that the athletes don't know when exactly they'll be able to play in a game, or what that game might look like, and the strange themes the COVID-19 pandemic has wrought become evident. "We're trying to keep an optimistic a...

  • Early deer season netting low harvest

    Drew Lawson, The Times|Updated Oct 30, 2020

DAVENPORT – It appears that this year’s ammo shortfall didn’t encourage the deer population to reveal themselves to hunters, as early hunting season has netted the smallest harvest in some time. “It’s probably one of the slowest, non-eventful deer seasons I’ve ever worked,” Officer Curt Wood of the Department of Fish and Wildlife said. Wood has worked in Lincoln County in his position for 25 years. He said opening weekend for deer hunting season was “one of the slowest weekends” he’s had on the job. “I think deer population...
