Recently, as you may recall, the girls of Scout Troop #3362 carried out various fund-raising activities which included selling laundry soap and cheesecakes and hosting a clothing drive in order to raise $16,000 (each girl was responsible for raising a minimum of $2,000) for travel expenses to Washington, D.C. Well, in case you were curious, the girls accomplished their goals and, accompanied by Girl Scouts from Wilbur, left Washington state June 17 by plane for a 10-day...
This past summer I found myself sitting in the middle of a dirt road/driveway leading to a friend’s farmhouse listening. Listening to nothing, but then again listening to everything. The wind in the grass, the lowing of cattle and the sound of horses hoofs as they run from one location to another. There was no noise of passing cars, cell phones, stereos, televisions or that low electrical hum that you never notice until the power goes out. I was listening to nothing. N...
Saturday, September 16, was a beautiful day with the sun shining, a slight breeze in the air which made for a nearly perfect temperature all day. It was the kind of day that Pastor Tim would have loved, and you could feel his smile and hear his one-of-a-kind chuckle with every new act. Hosted by Tammy Carlson Tokas and with both adult and youth divisions, she allowed sign-ups until the very last possible minute. Nate Lathrop, 51, opened the show with an interesting array of...

As I was getting ready for work Friday, June 30, I received a message from Kaylene James that said, "Today, for the last day of track and field camp, they are having a mini track meet. Thought if the paper needed to fill some space, it would be good. It goes from 9-11 a.m." She then told me it was for incoming grades 1-6. The week-long track and field camp is just one of several activities being hosted by Go! Odessa Recreation, a non-profit founded and run by James to bring...
It's the morning of Saturday, April 29, of Spring Fling in Odessa, and I'm getting ready to follow through on a commitment I made just a few days before. I am meeting Sean Owsley, lead singer of the Blue Mustangs band and the morning news anchor for KHQ-6 news in Spokane to conduct my first solo interview. I'm not nervous, which was exactly what I had hoped for. The main reason I chose him for my first interview is that he seemed like a very down-to-earth person. I had been ir...
Kaylene James is a busy lady. Along with a husband (Brian), two children (Evan 15 and Merick 1), she also owns and operates a licensed daycare, Kinder Haus Family Home Childcare. One would think finding time for herself, let alone any additional projects, would be difficult, maybe even impossible. If you thought that, you thought wrong. James has found a new project involving something near and dear to her heart. Children. She has now started GO! Odessa Recreation, a...

They have held multiple fundraisers already to help them meet a $16,000 goal. Each...
One particular thing I have truly enjoyed while living in Odessa is watching the little ones, kids and teenagers, grow. In eight short years I have gotten to know quite a few of the kids around Odessa. I have witnessed two siblings close to toddler age as they became pre-teens and began playing sports. I’ve seen teenagers graduate from high school, become young adults, move back after college, get their first career jobs or settle down and start a family. I’ve sold lot...
The junior-high Titan football team has had a great start to the 8-man football season with a 2-0 record so far. Their first game was a 14-point win against ACH with a final score of 27-13. Then following that with a 47 point win against Entiat, the final score being 74-27. So, imagine my surprise when I opened my in-box to find something slightly different from Coach Larry Weber. Instead of a rundown of the game, the great plays that were made and a bunch of statistics, I fou...
The Titan football team took the field by storm in the Sausage Bowl game on Saturday when they annihilated Republic by a score of 60-6. The games started with four touchdowns in the first quarter. The first by Colton Hunt scoring on a 22-yard run, but missing the two-point conversion. Not to be outdone, Gaven Elder also ran the ball for 22 yards and scored. The two-point conversion was run in by Marcus King, making the score 14-0. Catching the pass from Hunt, Brad Johnston...
This week The Record begins an occasional series on newcomers to Odessa. Anyone who would like to share their stories and introduce themselves to the community is welcome to call or come by The Record's office and have a chat with us. It's Friday morning and I am sitting down with newcomers to Odessa James and Vivianne Poe. Many of you have likely already met James at Ramm Hardware, where he has accepted a job, or Vivianne who has recently discovered a love for quilting and is...
Dear younger self, I thought I would write a list in hopes you might read it, and maybe it will help guide you throughout the rest of your life. I don’t claim to know everything, but what I do know is that about 80 percent of what you think you know, is incorrect. 1. Have self-confidence. I know you moved around a lot and it has contributed to your low self-esteem and shyness. You have mastered the art of “blending in,” but trust me when I say this, you won’t be this shy gir...

Once again she broke her previous school record of 9'6" set at regionals just a week earlier. Simon took...
If you’ve lived in Odessa for any length of time, then you know who Paul Hopp is. I’ve never heard anyone utter as much as one cross word about Paul. To know him is to love him, and if you don’t love him, you don’t know him. With a passion for woodwork, Paul is normally covered in wood chips or blanketed in sawdust. He is also the kind of guy with a hand to lend, a grin on his face and a genuine smile for everybody. He will also readily hand out a good teasing and fully e...

With the rain on Friday, it started out to be a dreary, cold weekend for Odessa's Spring Fling. By Saturday, however, the sun was out, the jackets were off and spirits were high, not only for quilt show and garage sales but also for the FFA plant sale and the second annual Odessa Car and Bike Show, complete with giant guitar and a band. There wasn't a dull moment at the FFA plant sale. With the beautiful flowers and huge tomato plants, there was a reason for the constant...
