    Terrie Schmidt-Crosby|Updated Apr 6, 2017

The Desert 100 off-road motorcycle endurance race may have been the largest ever judging from the size of the campsite at the corner of Irby Road and SR 28. Configured like a giant "L" the site certainly covered more ground than we had seen before at prior races. The official results are still being tabulated and finalized and will be posted on the website of the Stumpjumpers Motorcycle Club as soon as possible. As for how the Odessa vendors did, information is still being...

  • Town council

    Terrie Schmidt-Crosby|Updated Apr 6, 2017

The issue of parking next to the community center was discussed by the council with input from police chief Tom Clark. The decision was made to utilize perpendicular parking with spaces marked by white stripes on the east side of the building, beginning just north of the door to the town clerk’s office. The area adjacent to the fire hydrant at the corner of First Avenue and First Street would become a no-parking zone. The question of whether perpendicular parking of large pickup trucks would allow enough space on the street f...

  • Town Council

    Terrie Schmidt-Crosby|Updated Apr 1, 2017

Odessa’s feral cat problem has grown to unmanageable proportions in various hot spots all over town. Citizen complaints and concern by the health care community have prompted the Town of Odessa to pass an ordinance requiring pet owners to license their cats as well as their dogs, so that efforts to trap the feral cats do not scoop up people’s pets along with the wild ones. Police chief Tom Clark has been working with Adams County Pet Rescue on ways to humanely deal with the feral cat problem, as well as with loose dogs who...

    Terrie Schmidt-Crosby|Updated Mar 28, 2017

Quilt Til You Wilt took place Monday in the Odessa Community Center with many kinds of activities and presentations going on all day long. • Biodiesel plant sale postponed again

    Terrie Schmidt-Crosby|Updated Mar 27, 2017

A closing date of March 28 for the sale of Odessa’s mothballed biodiesel processing facility will pass, like so many dates preceding it, with no action taken. The sale is however still pending following Monday evening’s meeting of the Public Development Authority in the hospital guild room. PDA president Kim Ramm, PDA manager Stacey Rasmussen and the group’s other members were once again disappointed at the time-consuming process leading to a possible sale that is no longer being measured in months but in years. With Richard...

  • Town Council

    Terrie Schmidt-Crosby|Updated Mar 27, 2017

Council members discussed a suggestion from town clerk Gail Kiesz that the parking along the side of the community center be changed to angle parking. The reason for the change was that large pickups in particular take up too much of the roadway when parked facing straight in toward the building. Since the roadway is also a designated truck route, future issues could arise. Deciding that the issue needed more study, the council opted to table it until the next meeting. Odessa Cemetery Cemetery issues were raised by public...

  • Firemen's auction of March 4 a success

    Terrie Schmidt-Crosby|Updated Mar 20, 2017

The Odessa Volunteer Fire Department held its seventh annual equipment auction Saturday, March 4, and was able to draw a better crowd than had been expected thanks to some last-minute additions to the list of items for sale. Only one of the items in the auction failed to sell. After last year’s auction that included several estate sales and vehicles from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, the firefighters were expecting that this year might look like a flop in comparison. They were therefore pleasantly surprised when sev...

Board chairman Ed Deife began by asking those in attendance to share their thoughts and concerns. Prior to the discussion, superintendent Dan Read asked those present to provide feedback in writing by listing the pros and cons of the cooperative on handouts he provided. What appeared to concern those present the most was a perceived lack of...

    Terrie Schmidt-Crosby|Updated Feb 16, 2017

Long-time Odessa Trading Company employee Bud Largent thought it would be a good idea to introduce the company's three newest employees to the Odessa community, especially since all three are from out of the immediate area. OTC manager H.P. Carstensen agreed, so Largent invited The Record to come and talk to the three gentlemen and take their picture. All three are mechanics who work on the farm equipment that OTC sells and services. They made sure that one of the tractors...

  • Recent house fire update

    Terrie Schmidt-Crosby|Updated Feb 16, 2017

Our story last week on the fire that destroyed the home of John Hilty was incorrect on a couple of minor points. Hilty had started out for Moses Lake that morning, but the roads were bad, and he said he just had a feeling he ought to go home. And he did. He settled down in his living room to decide what to do for the day when he heard a loud pop somewhere in the house. In a matter of minutes, flames were forcing him to scramble for a few photo albums and get out of the house. The fire burned very hot and very fast and gutted...
