  • Rattlesnakes spotted around town

    Terrie Schmidt-Crosby|Updated Oct 19, 2020

At least three different rattlesnakes visited downtown Odessa last week. Why so many at about the same time is a mystery. It is fairly rare that the slithering critters are seen on Odessa's streets. One snake was first seen under the bench on the sidewalk outside of the Odessa Record's office. It eventually moved down the street to the west and was dispatched by Nate Lathrop when it arrived at Rolling Thunder Pizza. Another rattler showed up in the rear parking lot of the...

    Terrie Schmidt-Crosby, The Record|Updated Jul 13, 2020

ODESSA - The Independence Day holiday offered a gigantic yard sale and a barbecued lunch to local folks, who participated in droves. And those who purchased illegal fireworks were also plentiful as the big boomers frightened household pets and frayed the nerves of PTSD sufferers all over town. Fortunately, all the ruckus died down after about 11 p.m., and the night was peaceful. The yard sale benefitting the Old Town Hall Rejuvenation Society took place on the grounds of the...

1 years ago July 9, 1920 Rainmaker Hatfield is reported to have packed up his equipment and left Moses Lake last week. Although many gave him credit for bringing when he first set up at the lake, very few had any faith in him as a rainmaker when he left. It is said, however, that he was paid $3,000 for his efforts, as a two-inch rainfall fell in some parts of Grant County in early June. Mill to start soon. The big chain ordered from the factory, for which the mill force has been waiting for about six weeks, finally arrived...

  • A different kind of Memorial Day

    Terrie Schmidt-Crosby, The Record|Updated May 21, 2020

Monday, May 25, 2020, is when the U.S. celebrates Memorial Day this year. Once traditionally celebrated May 30, it has for several years been celebrated on the final Monday in May so that U.S. workers can enjoy a three-day weekend. Is it surprising, then, that many Americans use the day as a mini-vacation, getting a head start on summer fun by heading to the lakes, the mountains or seashore? All war veterans, however, are very aware of the real meaning of Memorial Day. They know that honoring the nation’s war dead p...
