O-H 8 13 7 17 45 ACH 16 23 18 15 72 Many of the team players had just finished a football season that went all the way to the championship game. Perhaps the team had a difficult time getting into the right mindset for basketball. For whatever reason, the play was certainly not up to the abilities these young athletes are known for. Freshman...
The weather in Odessa has left our community with more snow than we have seen in several years. Forecasts for the next week or so vary from whatever weather outlet one chooses to consult but seem to agree that we will have more snow from Friday into Saturday. On Tuesday, town crews cleared much of the slush that followed the warm temperatures on Monday from the main streets and as many side streets as they could manage. Police chief Tom Clark kept vehicles from interfering...

Nerves appeared to be a factor, too, as bobbled catches, hesitancy and turnovers hindered t...

Coach Jeff Nelson named Lukas Marshall the Athlete of the Week. Defensively, Marshall shut down ACH’s running...
Last Friday in another home game in Odessa, the Titans played Entiat, winning 72-16. Titan quarterback Colton Hunt was still sidelined with a sprained ankle. Freshman backup QB Camden Weber stepped up and led the Titans to another lopsided victory. Gaven Elder paced the Titan offense in this game from the very beginning, picking off an Entiat pass on their first offensive play of the game. The Titans then scored first as G. Elder ran 30 yards for the touchdown and then also...

Last Friday at home in Odessa, the Titans played the Inchelium Hornets, winning 60-14 in a contest that was much closer than the score would indicate. With quarterback Colton Hunt sidelined with a sprained ankle, freshman backup QB Camden Weber did a credible job of guiding the offense. After some beginning butterflies, he settled down and let his fleet-footed running backs have their chances with the ball. The Hornets marched down the field after receiving the opening kickoff and scored, following up with a two-point...

It was another lopsided win for the Titans last Friday, traveling to Pateros for another league game. Gaven Elder ran 15 yards for the game’s first touchdown. The two-point conversion was run in by Sage Elder. G. Elder also ran for the second TD on a 59-yard sprint. The two-point conversion pass from quarterback Colton Hunt to Brad Johnston was good, making the score 16-0. Pateros quarterback Jeremy Piechalski’s pass was intercepted by Josh Clark, who returned the ball 81 yards for the TD. Marcus King ran the ball for two mor...
The Titan football team chalked up another lopsided win last Friday in an away contest against Wellpinit. Cont. from last week Although Saturday morning's weather was a bit of a downer for the folks in the parade, as well as for those watching, the event went on as scheduled, and the spectators took their places on the sidewalks to applaud the participants. Tim Coley and Gordon Neale, former Odessa residents and still members of the Oom Pas and Mas polka band, were the announcers for the parade and kept the downtown crowd entertained with their banter. The rain at parade time was...

The 46th annual Odessa Deutschesfest drew enthusiastic crowds to all of the events offered. Despite some relatively light rain during the Saturday morning parade and the threat of even windier conditions, the folks who attended appeared not to be bothered much at all. The rain cleared up by about noon, and the forecast winds were not as bad as had been predicted. The vendors we talked to said they were prepared for such contingencies and had well-secured booths. The rain that...
At Monday evening's meeting of the Odessa Town Council, new police chief Thomas Clark was sworn in by Odessa Mayor pro tem Terry Goetz in the absence of Mayor Lois Hubbard. Following a lengthy search for the "right fit," council members selected Clark to fill the position vacated some months ago by Helen Coubra. Joining Clark for the occasion were almost his entire family, plus two former colleagues from the Quincy Police Department. A native of northern California, Clark...
Some additonal pictures of the destruction caused by the recent Irby and Black Rock Road fires have been provided to The Record by Teresa Iksic and Stan Dammel. Since The Record is able to run color this week, we have included a color picture on the front page of one of the recent fires. More color pictures are available at The Record's website at www.odessarecord.com. High temperatures and dry conditions mean that brush fires large and small continue to keep area...
The Odessa Chamber of Commerce met August 9 to discuss preparations for this year’s Fest. Themes for the next few years leading up to the 50th anniversary of the festival have been selected by the Chamber’s marketing committee. This year’s theme is “Adventures in Wunderland” to conform to the theme of the decorations selected for the Odessa float. An online contest by the marketing committee was conducted on Facebook to select a name for the newly adopted Deutschesfest mascot, a rubber chicken. Given the popularity of the “Ch...
Pastor Tim Hauge of Christ Lutheran Church in Odessa died Monday from injuries suffered in a harvest accident. He was driving a semi loaded with wheat toward town when the vehicle’s brakes failed. According to the Washington State Patrol, the vehicle “was southbound on SR21 approaching milepost 56. [The] vehicle experienced a brake failure, left the road near milepost 56, crossed over Railroad Avenue, continued up an embankment and struck a building.” Hauge was trapped in the vehicle, as EMTs and firefighters rushed to extri...
Sunday, August 9, saw thunderclouds roll through the Odessa area, as lightning strikes produced wildfires. The fires burned mostly sage brush and bunchgrass pasture land but also threatened several homes in and around the former town of Irby. Firefighters fought diligently to protect the homes on farms and within Irby, and they were successful in doing so. The fire was bearing down on the home of Alex and Kaci King and their young son Simon after roaring through tinder-dry...
A traveling circus came through the area last Saturday. An advance member of the group came through town the preceding Wednesday to put up posters and give out free tickets to business owners. Unfortunately, the Black Rock Road fire blew up and threatened the town the same day as the performance. Those who were not fighting the fire were likely off to area lakes to beat the heat and relax following the completion of harvest. Whatever the reasons, attendance at the circus was...
Saturday turned out to be a very hectic day for area firefighters and, ultimately, for firefighters throughout the state as hot temperatures and breezy conditions rapidly turned small fires into major conflagrations. By evening, a pall of smoke covered the town of Odessa, as fire crews worked to hold the leading edge of the fire line at Batum Road, about five miles outside of town on Highway 28. Firefighters from many other jurisdictions poured into Odessa, setting up a...
The Odessa Town Council met Monday evening in the public library to discuss the town’s business. Council member Terry Goetz reported on the history of Odessa’s downtown trees. Recent discussions at meetings of the Odessa Chamber of Commerce and Town Council had led to more questions than answers regarding responsibility for the trees. Goetz quoted the May 3, 2007 edition of The Odessa Record in which then publisher Don Walter wrote that the Kwanson flowering cherry trees that had been planted along the First Avenue bus...
The Odessa area wheat crop is now being harvested and delivered to the town's two grain cooperatives. He estimates that about 30 to 35 percent of the wheat harvest has already been delivered to the Trading Company's rural and in-town stations. Over at the Odessa Union Warehouse,...
