The Odessa Record was delayed Wednesday morning when electrical power was knocked out at about 8:15 a.m. A truck was said to have backed into a power pole located on the property of the Grange Supply Company of Odessa-Harrington. The impact shattered the wooden pole, leaving a pile of kindling on the ground and the cross bars dangling from the wires. The oil-filled transformers also hit the ground, where a pool of oil spread out and mixed with the snow and gravel. Local...
January The end of 2012 and beginning of 2013 saw the Odessa biodiesel manufacturing facility, Inland Empire Oilseeds (IEO), hit a rocky patch on its way to successful, long-term operation. Just prior to Christmas, the majority of the “permanent” staff was laid off. It was then learned that on December 27, 2012, IEO had filed a petition requesting Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection. Odessa’s town government saw changes in early 2013, as Gail Kiesz was sworn in as the new town clerk during the first town council meeting of the n...
Thirty years ago I was a light smoker. What can I say? I liked the effect nicotine had on my brain. Once I was hooked, I even liked the smell of tobacco smoke. Then there was the ritual. I enjoyed lighting up with others, sharing a match, having a few minutes to talk together. But I also realized smoking was a dangerous habit. After several failed attempts to quit, I was able, for some reason, to go cold turkey and finally be done with tobacco. There were some difficult days a...
Volunteers are the heartbeat of our community. These unsung heroes just show up to help and assist with all of the various behind-the-scenes activities that we so often take for granted. In a perfect world, lots of people would all help out a little. But we all know that in the real world it doesn't work that way. Especially in small towns, a small core group of familiar faces do 90 percent of the work. Justin Parr is one of those people. At Saturday night's New Years Eve Cham...

Flu season has arrived in Lincoln County. The area has seen an increase in flu cases and hospitalization in recent weeks. The good news is, it’s one of the strains this year’s vaccine provides protection against.” Flu symptoms includ...
Confusion over the taxability of medical marijuana is leading the Washington State Department of Revenue (Revenue) to start an education effort early in the new year. Revenue is mailing letters to several hundred businesses and organizations that provide medical marijuana, “medibles,” and related products, explaining that taxes apply to their transactions. Letter recipients include dispensaries, collectives, cooperatives, nonprofits and businesses that should be – but are not – registered with Revenue or paying taxes....
To the Editor: I would like to thank the GOP for all they have done. I would like to thank the Republicans for shutting down the government for 17 days. Their poll numbers collapsed. Veterans, tourists and the elderly were upset, to say the least. The Republicans lost the women voters in Virginia, and business people began to question their support of the GOP because of the $24 billion loss to the economy during these 17 days. I really would like to thank them. I would like to thank House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) for...
