My Wonderful Teacher My third grade teacher, a gem so precious and rare She was regal, elegant, a jewel beyond compare Her name’s Mrs. Mangis, what a lovely lady she was And I loved her to pieces, well --- just because So beautiful, so graceful, so tall, and so thin There’s so much to say, I don’t know where to begin Her voice was so soothing, so soft to my ear like stringed violins, a pure symphony to hear The smile on her face, could make my sad eyes shine For life wasn’t so easy, for this boy about to turn nine Compass...

I am an American because I love my country. One group of people who definitely show they are Americans are the United States soldiers. They fight for our country. There is the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. They defend us. It doesn’t matter where they are or who they are fighting. All the soldiers would give their life for anyone in the U.S. The reason the soldiers go into the Army is to fight for our country, earn the respect of our country and serve our country. Another group of people who show they are Americans are o...
Last week we ended the first part of our story on the January 24 oilseed workshop held at the Odessa Community Center without telling our readers that the article was to continue. Forgive us that oversight. There was much more to the workshop, and we should have let you know that we weren’t finished. --The Editor. Dennis Roe spoke from the perspective of an ag lender. He spent five years on a dryland wheat farm near Goldendale, raising grain, hay and livestock. He received d...

Since 2008 meals have been provided three days per week at Old Town Hall. Beginning in January, these meals have been reduced to two days a week. The senior meals program is administered by Okanogan County Transportation and Nutrition (OCTN), which is a private non-profit company that provides nutritionally balanced meals t...
Hi, here I am again. Continued from last week “The Schibels.” I asked Jeff Schibel what he remembered about the Batum grain elevators and who the closest neighbors were? His answer for the Batum grain elevators was “the “boxcars” the Odessa Trading Co. would load with grain and then have them taken west toward Moody Ruff, Moses Lake, Washington and for neighbors, there were the Webers, Finks, Heimbigners, Melchers, Kageles. Jeff also mentioned the railroad tracks were not maintain very well and before they were finally r...
The wonders of the computer age! Without them, visitors to Odessa this week from Switzerland would likely never have known what happened to a long-lost relative who left his Swiss homeland before the turn of the last century to become a circuit-riding minister for several churches in the Pacific Northwest. Philipp and Marion Graedel are from Burgdorf, a city of more than 15,000 inhabitants not far from the capital of Switzerland, Bern. Burgdorf is located in the valley carved...
Valentine's Day Thinking about Valentines Day as I often do, as it is my favorite day of the year, I thought about Love. Many poems have been written about love (some from the deepest feelings from the heart, and some I am sure in an attempt to stay out of trouble with one’s partner). What is Love; how is it defined; what does it mean; and, most importantly for poets, what does it rhyme with? Dove rhymes with love, but so does glove. dove: noun 1. any bird of the family Columbidae, especially the smaller species with p...
The Odessa-Harrington boys basketball team traveled to Northport Tuesday, February 7, for the first-round 1B District playoffs. Going in they had high hopes of an easy victory. Up by 11 points at the half, they still had high hopes. But their opponents had high hopes, too. After a third quarter in which the two team matched each other point for point, the fourth quarter saw Northport draw the score ever closer. Northport’s Konkler beat the buzzer with a lay-in that sealed the Titans’ fate. The Titans now must make their way...

Odessa’s excellent train service ended abruptly in early 1929, with the opening of the Great Northern Railway’s Cascade Tunnel. With shorter operating time, the railroad eliminated several stops for its express trains. From then on, Odessa was left with only local service, one west-bound train in the morning and the other east-bound in the afternoon. The Record reported the changes which were taking place in its issue of January 31, 1929: Odessa will be one of the towns that will have no reason to rejoice over the Great Nor...
President Obama recently said, “In January, American businesses added another 257,000 jobs,” and that the economy was on a roll. That is great news, but he forgot to tell you that in December and January alone there were more than 2.5 million fewer people working. This is from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ own table published Feb. 2, 2012. Mr. Obama, if the economy is getting better, then why did new home sales in the United States hit a brand new all-time record low during 2011? If the economy is getting better, then...
After hearing the news Sunday of the Powell boys of western Washington who lost their lives through the actions of their father, not to mention their still-missing mother, I needed to express how grateful our family is to be on the receiving end of very caring, protecting local police. If not for the actions of Marshall Mike Wren and Officer Bryce Peterson, we could be a similar story. The day after harvest, July 2008, we received a frantic call from our daughter Korianne, at the time in Spokane, to come move her and her infa...
It does seem like there’s something magical about artesian wells. Digging down to a level in the Earth from which water then spurts unaided is like a dream come true for some. And, after all, why pay the electric company for power to run a pump if Mother Nature will do all the work herself? From times immemorial people have thought that water gushing from artesian wells must have different medicinal or even spiritual properties from plain ol’ water in a creek or a typical wel...
Byron Behne watches the grain markets for the Odessa Union Warehouse. 2/3/12: Wheat futures fell Friday after Russia’s announcement that there would be no curbs on exports and raised their export projection to 27 million metric tons. That seemed like it should have done some pretty severe damage to wheat prices, however Chicago futures were only off 2 cents on the day. There’s another USDA supply and demand report out next Thursday to contend with. There should be some cuts to South American crop production; the question is,...
Saturday was my birthday. I’ve officially reached the point where I no longer wish to acknowledge birthdays, but am forced to by friends and family. Thank you very much. I’ve been trying to convince myself that I’m still middle-aged, but I’ll have to live to 116 for that to be true. And to be honest, I don’t want to go there. So now I’m just trying to convince myself that over the hill means I’m on the sunny side of the slope. Not the slippery side. Birthdays are not just...
