    The Times|Updated Feb 18, 2021

DAVENPORT – Below-freezing temperatures and precipitation coincided for the first time in February after a dry start to the month President's Day. 3.2 inches were reported here by the National Weather Service (though it appeared to be more) on the Feb. 15 holiday, marking the first snowfall of the month after a drier-than-usual January. A small amount of snow fell Tuesday and Wednesday, but didn't match the bluster of Washington's Birthday. A slight chance of snow was f...

  • The doses went down to Whitman

    Drew Lawson, The Times|Updated Feb 18, 2021

DAVENPORT – It’s becoming routine at this point: The Lincoln County Health Department applies for new Moderna vaccine doses aimed at preventing COVID-19 infection. The state doesn’t provide any new doses, while mass vaccination sites, such as the Spokane Arena, receive doses in the thousands. That was the case this week for the third week in a row, health department public health administrator Ed Dzedzy informed the county commissioners at their Feb. 16 meeting. This week, however, a new wrinkle was thrown in, and it invol...

Here are some updates on those sit-down restaurants, including a meal recommendation from a staff member at those eateries. El Ranchit...

  • Historical feature: Jewelry heist strikes 1918 Davenport

    Gabe Gants|Updated Feb 18, 2021

If there was ever a year in history that rivaled 2020's embrace for the rapture, it would have to be the year of 1918. It was a year that, like 2020, saw our country in the middle of a global pandemic, while also still in the midst of battling World War 1. Historians suggest crime in the United States decreased that year, just like it supposedly did in 2020, but if you lived in Davenport at that time you'd probably have a different opinion. In addition to the world events of t...

Joseph Claypoole, Washington State Journal|Updated Feb 17, 2021

OLYMPIA – The summer months are coming to an end. Children are heading back to school, but they are experiencing summer learning loss and now require remedial education. Every year, teachers say the first month of school after the summer break is spent discovering what the students have retained and then reviewing what they’ve forgotten. This learning loss disproportionately affects indigent students according to a 2016 American Education Research Association study. Substitute Senate Bill 5147 proposes a four-year, year-round...

1 years ago Feb. 18, 1921 The masque ball given by Odessa members of the Elks fraternity at the Community Hall Friday night was unquestionably the social event of the season for the dancing public. From the standpoint of weather it came at a most unfavorable time for the roads in some places were almost impassible, and a number of people who started were unable to get to Odessa by their cars stalling in the mud. Nevertheless, the crowd that came filled the hall and there were many fine costumes. The Odessa Gun Club lost its...

  • Tax credits, free lunches, land leases, immigrant help get House approval

Sydney Brown, Washington State Journal|Updated Feb 17, 2021

OLYMPIA – As a single mother who survived on food stamps, an added $20 monthly cost for her four children’s lunch was more than Rep. Melanie Morgan, D-Tacoma, could afford at that time. Eliminating copays on her children’s lunch would have made a dramatic difference for her and her children, she said. “There was a reason I was on food stamps,” Morgan told the House of Representatives Feb. 12. “This may not seem like a lot to many people, but for me … $20 was a lot of money.” House Bill 1342, which would force schools that hav...

Judy Warnick, Washington State Senator|Updated Feb 17, 2021

We are fast approaching the halfway point of the 2021 legislative session. There have been some challenges conducting business as usual for the Legislature during this unusual time in our lives. The governor’s decision to close off a large portion of the Capitol grounds to the public is concerning, as are his ever-changing metrics and policies when it comes to reopening our state. I’m very pleased that all parts of our state have been able to move to Phase 2 of the latest reop...
