    Terrie Schmidt Crosby|Updated Feb 25, 2012

Whether you love or hate the Canada goose, you would have to admit that the one pictured above looks like the real thing. In 1982, John M. Schmauder completed “The Wonder Deek,” as he titled it on the bottom of the platform bearing his carving, a decoy representating a very lifelike Canada goose. The goose is carved out of sugar pine, a wood particularly favored by woodworkers, according Mark Fulford, the current owner of the goose. Securely mounted on a wooden platform, it...

House Republicans presented what they call an “all priorities” state budget for the public to review. With less than three weeks left in the legislative session, House Republicans’ budget would fund core state services and take the prospect of a tax increase on the November ballot off the table. Rep. Joel Kretz supports the budget and believes it represents the values and priorities of Washingtonians. “We’ve worked with the majority party up to this point to find common ground on a budget solution that closes the nearly $1...

The Democratic party continued to rely on the caucus system to select their delegates, although Democratic candidates appeared on the primary ballot. This year, the secretary of state and the state legislature decided to cancel the presidential primary due to budgetary considerations. As the largest state to caucus...

  • Advice from a small town girl

    Lise Ott|Updated Feb 25, 2012

I suspect that I’m not the only person who hides secrets from the past right where they belong – in the past. My secrets range from slightly embarrassing (no, I’m not going to tell you) to humiliating (still not going to tell you) all the way to downright shameful (absolutely not!) I’ve discovered, though, that secrets just don’t want to stay where I put them. Even though I’m still not going to tell you, they bubble to the surface of my consciousness on a fairly regular bas...

  • Steps forward and back for the world's nukes

    Dr E Kirsten Peters|Updated Feb 25, 2012

My household has no less than three nightlights that give good service to me and mine. Perhaps you have a nightlight or two yourself. And beyond those useful little devices, of course, there are the regular lights that a person may switch on in the middle of a windless night. Those basic facts highlight the idea that we all have need for electrical power in the grid at times that solar and wind can't help us. The kind of electricity we need at all times is what utilities call...

  • No more Band-Aids for the state budget

    Don C Brunell|Updated Feb 25, 2012

The state’s Revenue Forecast Council reports that tax revenues for this biennium will be $96 million higher than projected last November, and state tax collections for 2013-15 are projected to grow by 6.6 percent. But we shouldn’t get too excited. Even with this additional revenue and the cuts the Legislature made in December’s special session, lawmakers still need to make up about a $1 billion deficit to balance the budge...

Does the project stop here? GWMA project managers hope not, because there are still a lot of questions to be answered. The hydrologic...

  • Celebrating National FFA Week

    Updated Feb 24, 2012

Through FFA, young people learn practical approaches to the...
