  • Mount St. Helens, 40 years later

Roger Harnack, The Odessa Record|Updated May 19, 2020

ODESSA - Eastern Washington residents are wearing medical masks these days due to the coronavirus pandemic. But longtime resi- dents recall that this isn't the first time they've seen masks covering faces. Some say they can recall the day the morn- ing that daylight turned to night – May 18, 1980. That was the day Mount St. Helens erupted. "It was pitch black," resident Mike Cronrath recalled. "If you put your hand in front of your face, you wouldn't have been able to see i...

  • Profile: Nurse Michelle Wilkins

Jeremy Burnham, The Davenport Times|Updated May 19, 2020

DAVENPORT - In March, Lincoln Hospital nurse Michelle Wilkins was offered new position. The infec- tion control manager of the nursing staff retired. The U.S. was still in the early stages of the COVID- 19 pandemic at the time. Taking over infection management at a hospital in the middle of a pandemic may not seem appealing to everyone. Wilkins, who had been with the hospital for almost six years, decided to accept the challenge. "Who volunteers for a job like that, right?"...

  • This Week in Odessa History

    Terrie Schmidt-Crosby, The Record|Updated May 18, 2020

1 years ago May 14, 1920 The Odessa vs. Davenport ball game [town team, not high school] broke up in a row in the seventh inning with Odessa leading 5-4. A questionable call was made by the Davenport umpire at home plate after a short fly ball that landed foul, and the Davenport player at third headed for home. Odessa team members and fans said the runner never touched the plate, but the ump ruled him safe. It was also claimed that the runner was off base at the time of the foul pop-up and never returned to tag the base....

  • Medicaid: State cash cow, until it isn't

    Updated May 18, 2020

Medicaid began in 1965 as a safety-net health insurance entitlement for low-income families with children, the disabled, and some long-term care. The program is financed by both federal and state governments in sort of a 50/50 arrangement. In reality, poorer states receive a higher percent of federal money than richer states. Congress established the financial match program with the idea that state legislators would not increase the tax burden on their constituents. The entitlement would therefore stay small and be used for...

  • Test and trace isn't 'voluntary'

Roger Harnack, Free Press Publishing|Updated May 18, 2020

Voluntary must have a different meaning inside state government offices. On Tuesday, Gov. Jay Inslee and other partici- pants in his coronavirus press conference said par- ticipation in a statewide contact tracing program would be voluntary. Under the program, anyone who tests positive for coronavirus would be contacted by the Washington National Guard, state Department of Licensing employees or other so-called “health professionals” to determine an infected person’s whereabou...

  • Don't overrun counties that reopen

Jeremy Burnham, The Davenport Times|Updated May 18, 2020

By now, everyone in the state knows that there are a few counties that are being allowed to open their economies before others. Theses counties are even being allowed to open restaurant dining rooms—albeit to reduced seating. The handful of counties being allowed to open have populations of under 75,000 and none have had any new cases of COVID-19 in at least three weeks. In other words, they are “low risk.” Let’s keep it that way. Most of the counties opening up are on the...

  • Rural hospitals strained by virus

Jeremy Burnham, The Davenport Times|Updated May 18, 2020

DAVENPORT — Rural medical centers like Lincoln Hospital and its clinics are struggling to survive during the coronavirus shutdown. A shortage of patients has prompted Lincoln Hospital officials to ask employees to take volun- tary standby unemployment. “We are doing everything in our power to avoid mandatory furloughs,” CEO Tyson Lacy said. The misconceptions of hospitals being overran by patients sick with COVID-19 are scaring would-be patients from visiting for other issues. As a result, rural hospitals are mostly empty...
