    Katie (Connolly) and Matthew Douglas proudly announce the birth of their son, Michael James Douglas. He was born February 17 in Kirkland, weighing 8 pounds, 10 ounces and measuring 19.5 inches.     Jordan Larmer and Patrick Velverde, members of the Odessa High School FFA chapter, attended a conference at the Cispus Learning Center in Randall, Wash., led by state and past national FFA officers. The conference theme was 212º – the temperature at which water boils. It focused on taking students to the boiling point of leadership.     Odessa students in grades 2-11 will present a musical called Hairspray, Jr. on March 31, 2016 at 1 p.m. (limited seating) and again at 7 p.m. in the school's multipurpose room. There is no cost for admission, but donations to help cover production expenses will be gladly accepted. This year, fourth-grade teacher Ellen Holman returns as the director.     The Odessa Fire Department's equipment auction last Saturday, February 27, was a big draw, as rigs from near and far poured into town for the 9 a.m. start. Much of the farming equipment was from the estate of local farmer/rancher Mike Connolly, with additional items from the (Brian) Homberg Farms estate.     This is the 98th year of the Spokesman-Review Inland Northwest Trapshoot, which includes trapshooters throughout Washington, Idaho, Montana and Oregon. The contest lasts for eight weeks each winter. It is said to be the oldest and largest shoot of its kind in the country.   • Taco feed serves at least 100 at Zion

    The Odessa Food Bank will be filling its shelves with plenty of new items following last Saturday evening’s taco feed held at the Zion Emmanuel Lutheran Church. The holiday meals provided by the food bank late in the year tend to reduce its holdings, so the beginning of the new year finds the shelves getting rather empty.     On February 24, the Odessa School Board held a workshop in the district office for the purpose of discussing policies and procedures. In attendance were Superintendent Dan Read, Principal Jamie Nelson, board members Ed Deife, Heather Valverde, Roland Singer, Chris Crossley and Janie Steward and facilities director Justin Parr.     The Grant County Health District is working to conclude its investigation of two Grant County residents’ deaths in February 2016. Washington State Public Health Laboratory recently confirmed that one of the submitted specimens was positive for botulism toxin. This information was sufficient to confirm the disease in both cases because they are from the same household with similar classic botulism symptoms.
