Sheriff's Report INCIDENT LOG Editor's note: Most items in this section reflect the starting point for response by local police and emergency agencies. The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office does not release names of individuals who report possible criminal or suspicious activities to dispatchers or alleged victims for this column. March 5: A woman described "a strange Facebook message" she had received. A 4-wheeler was blamed for tearing up Denny Station Road and leaving ruts in the roadway. A Davenport woman reported she was b...
Sharpen your sweet tooth for an entire column of desserts. My advise is to use this weeks column in moderation. Lemon Blueberry Cheesecake Bars were served at a recent women's gathering. Lecia Fink found this recipe on Pinterest. The recipe suggests using a food processor, but a blender and a mixer will get the job done just as well. Lemon Blueberry Cheesecake Bars Base: 1/2 stick unsalted butter (1/4 cup), plus extra to grease pan 2 Tbsp granulated sugar 3/8 tsp ground...

During a time when state supported colleges and junior colleges are having state funding reduced it seems to me that they are overlooking a possible solution. They could reduce the enrollment by being selective on who they admit. They can justify being more selective because nationwide only 50 percent who enroll will graduate. Naturally there are colleges who have better graduating rates. You can get on the internet and see which colleges have the best rates and after how many years. You will find state supported 4 year colle...
Due to the high cost of fresh crab this spring, the Odessa Lions Club offered a “Surf and Turf” dinner featuring steak and lobster instead. The dinner was held March 10, and drew over 200 diners. Crews were kept busy in the Heimbigner addition to the Community Center as well as outside the main kitchen, cooking both entree choices on grills. The Lions serve the community in many ways, and the annual dinner is one of the more entertaining. They also host the Turkey Car...

More than 30 schools representing the finest young scientific minds vied for top prizes in categories ranging from behavioral science to zoology. The following students did an outstanding job of presenting this year's research: Kira Powell: The Development of a Novel Sodium...

Harrington Harrington sent 19 students to the competition. Those finishing in the top six were: Jordan Larmer,...

The lease has been signed, the money continues to be raised and the hard work really begins now for those involved with the meat processing facility to be built on property adjacent to the Odessa Industrial Park. The Cattle Producers of Washington (CPoW), represented by Sue Lani Madsen of Edwall and Ed Gross of the Spokane Hutterian Brethren, signed the lease agreement Tuesday morning at the office of Mark DeWulf of the law firm Carpenter, McGuire & DeWulf. CPoW currently has...
Well, it is getting to be springlike around Odessa. At the same time, it also means that the time leading up to Deutschesfest is growing ever shorter. Maybe its time to start working on our German, too. Ron Sowinski, who visited Odessa a few months ago, was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam era and is happy to share this anecdote with our readers. I was with a small group of Army guys who had just flown from the USA into Frankfurt, Germany on a commercial flight. We were met and taken to the Frankfurt Bahnhof (railroad...
MBA (Master of Business Administration) students from Gonzaga University will be at the Lincoln County Courthouse Monday morning at 9 a.m. to share a second set of economic analyses with County Commissioners and the Economic Development Council (EDC). This analysis supplements the SWOT survey analysis conducted by EWU planning students this past winter. Both studies are being incorporated into the County’s comprehensive Economic Development Plan. The Gonzaga MBA students, Ben Wyborney, Mike Shaffer, and Napo Piani will c...

A new display is coming soon to the Odessa Historisches Museum, if enough contributors can be found: Odessa High School class rings. Over the years, each member of the graduating class has had the option of purchasing a class ring bearing the year of graduation. Though not as popular as it once was, the buying of class rings is still an option today. Paul Scheller of the Odessa Historical Society thought those rings and the changing styles through the years would make a nice display for the summer months when the museum is...
Byron Behne watches the grain markets for the Odessa Union Warehouse. 3/7/12: Obviously the grain markets were highly disappointed that the Colts cut Peyton Manning today and subsequently dropped about 20 cents a bushel in Chicago wheat and 16 cents a bushel in corn. Actually, it was just a continuation of the previous day’s negative momentum that pushed prices below some support levels and got the ball rolling downhill that much faster. Those prices dipped on concern about China’s slowing economic growth and the ever pop...
I recently had a discussion (some might say an argument) with a transplant to our community. The discussion opened with a disparaging remark (not one made by me) about the lack of availability of apparently anything this person wanted (ranging from fresh vegetables at a local restaurant to a pair of socks) in Odessa. Well, duh. I’m really sorry, but if you choose (and I can’t emphasize that word enough) to move to a town of 900 that is 40 miles from a settlement of any siz...
The Odessa Friends of the Pool met recently to wrap up our 2011 fundraisers and look forward to our 2012 season; both fundraisers and goals. As the treasurer, I was able to report that last year we were able to donate $22,000 to the Town of Odessa! The donation was an accumulation of three years’ worth of fundraising with the goal of relining all four of the pools. We were able to meet that goal because the community of Odessa, its businesses and individuals, are amazing. When we formed the Friends of the Pool in 2005, we o...
It started in 1935 with a $3.8 million loan to Cuba for the purchase of U.S. silver ingots. That loan, backed by the U.S. government, was the beginning of the Export-Import Bank. Today, the bank helps finance export sales by thousands of U.S. manufacturers. While it is little-known outside our nation’s capital, the Export-Import Bank is a lynchpin of our economy. It provides direct loans, loan guarantees and insurance to help finance sales of American goods and services o...
The Odessa Chamber of Commerce welcomed newly hired administrative assistant Jennifer Martin at the March 13 meeting. Martin, already a part-time employee at the Odessa Healthcare Foundation and Odessa Drug, will take on the tasks of keeping Chamber volunteers organized, as well as ensuring that the Chamber website is kept up to date. The remainder of the meeting was spent prioritizing expenditures for the year and reviewing needs for upcoming events. President Marlon Schafer presented a request for funding to replace aging...
Town council members and several members of the public were on hand Monday evening in the Odessa Public Library to hear a proposal by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office regarding having the LCSO take over as the law enforcement body for the Town of Odessa. Under the proposal presented by Sheriff Wade Magers and Undersheriff Kelly Watkins, the Odessa Town Marshal’s Office would be disbanded, although the current Odessa office location would remain and could serve as a LCSO substation for deputies to use for writing rep...
