A period piece from an earlier century can be a good learning experience for students. With the musical “Bugsy Malone,” Odessa students got a taste of the “flapper era” in American social history. They appeared to embrace it. Unfortunately, the music seemed a bit complex and out of the range of many of the vocalists. However, the acting was a notch above what one would expect of this age group. From first-graders to high-schoolers, the performers all did a great job of expr...

Aera Shin is studying biochemistry at the University of Washington and is scheduled to graduate this year. She is shadowing the medical providers during her stay at Odessa. She says she is very interested in emergency medicine, particularly in rural areas. “Much of my passion for medicine,” she says, “stems from my personal encounters watching my immigrant parents navigate their way through health care in the U.S. and my Christian faith.” In her free time, Shin enjoys reading...

Easter and spring school break herald times for families and friends to gather for celebratory meals. Baked ham, roast lamb, baked chicken are just a few of the main dishes served this time of year. Brussels Sprouts are still available in the markets and make a colorful garnish or side dish. Roasted Brussels Sprouts are quick and easy to prepare while the meat dish is resting before serving. Olive oil, coconut oil or bacon fat are three options in the recipe. Olive oil lets the full flavor of the spouts shine through, coconut...

Fifty-three years ago, excavation work at the Titan missile launching site at Batum, 16 miles southwest of Odessa, was underway, and members of the Odessa Chamber of Commerce and other area residents were given a tour of the facility. The Chamber was assisting the U.S. Air Force and contractors for the base’s construction in placing workers on the job and in finding housing for them in Odessa as well as in vacant farm homes in the area. Employment during early phases of construction was about 200. This went up to 1,300 the f...

Odessa police chief Helen Coubra told the Town Council Monday night that she has observed far too much speeding on First Avenue, and that, coupled with rampant jaywalking by the town’s residents and visitors, could lead one day to a serious accident or fatality. She and officer Bryce Peterson will focus over the next few weeks on reducing those two hazards. Warnings will precede ticketing in all but the most egregious cases. Mayor Doug Plinski read a letter to the council from an Odessa resident who had had a verbal a...

Spring has arrived. As temperatures rise across the region, the Washington State Department of Transportation reminds drivers to remove their studded tires by midnight, March 31. Studded tires are legal in Washington from November 1 to March 31, unless WSDOT grants an extension. Multiple forecasts indicate temperatures will be well above 50 degrees in many parts of the state, and WSDOT is not planning on extending the deadline. This year, Oregon and Washington are coordinating studded-tire removal dates to make travel rules...
There are two features of this time of year that make my heart glad. One is the rapidly increasing length of the day. In September we lose daylight quickly, but in the spring we gain it all back just as rapidly. Although the same pattern is repeated each year (so you’d think I’d be used to it), I’m always somehow surprised and delighted when we get to this time of year and have early sunrises and spreading daylight in the evenings. The other part of this time of year that...

New members of the board were introduced at the annual banquet held on March 16....
As we get closer to the celebration of “Mother’s Day,” I think of the women who have been a tremendous influence in shaping my life. My grandmother, my mother and my mother-in-law. My grandmother taught me the beauty of flowers, gardening, sewing and cooking. She had her picture in the paper many times with the flowers she grew and the garden she raised. This began my journey as a Proverbs 31 woman. My mother taught me love unconditionally. She always told her children “to be there for one another.” Even when we were far...
To Sheriff Wade Magers, Please pass along my deepest appreciation for your department’s initial effort on 11 March 13 at the crash site of the Navy EA-6B Prowler aircraft in Harrington and your support during the week-long accident investigation. Your department was instrumental in helping to control the initial crash scene and also clear the route from the crash site to Fairchild AFB in order to transfer the remains of our fallen [with] the respect they deserve. Over 100 members of our military community attended the d...
As I was reading (yet another) book that promised to have the solution to my weight problem, I realized that what I really want is to be a success story. Success stories are intended to be inspiring, I know, but when I read about other people who were a hundred pounds overweight and managed to lose it, I get depressed. Because, when it comes to my health, weight, or housekeeping, I just don’t seem to be able to stick to any kind of plan. Any individual who succeeds at changing...
The O-H boys golf team played a nine-hole match at Wilbur on Tuesday, March 19. It was cold and at times there were high winds, making for very challenging conditions, said head coach Sam Read. Boys medalist for the e...
Sequester. What Sequester? For two months we have heard nothing but how bad it is going to be, people will starve, people will die, schools will close, and any horrible thing you can think of. That’s all you heard from the President, the Vise President and their lap dogs in the media. Once again it was, “Do as I say, not as I do.” On a couple of recent trips overseas Vice President Biden and his entourage of 136 people stayed in a hotel in Paris for one night at a cost to the U.S. taxpayer of $585,000.50. In London for one n...
Byron Behne watches the grain markets for the Odessa Union Warehouse. 3/22/13: Back from vacation, but after seeing what the market has done since I left, perhaps I should have stayed away. Soft white wheat basis vs. Chicago futures dropped 45 cents from late last week into this week, a result of a large producer selling at the end of last week combined with limited known export demand for white wheat going forward. The last big export news was the CCC donation tender for Bangladesh which took place last week and reportedly...
