A week of rain showers was what one of the Stumpjumpers had asked for when he was in Odessa for the White Knuckle/Frostbite races the preceding weekend. He got his wish. There was no dust to be seen, so this race was different from every other Desert 100 that has been run on Wes and Faye King’s pasture a few miles outside of Odessa. Riders came across the finish platform with their bikes, and often themselves, covered in mud. The campsite was a muddy mess in places, and f...

Regardless of the snow and rain, wildfire season officially begins April 15, as specified by state law. The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) wants to remind people that the risk of wildfires can change rapidly during the spring when warmer, dryer weather occurs with increasing frequency. Wildfires can damage natural resources, destroy homes and threaten the safety of the public and the firefighters who protect forests and communities. As of the end of last week, 13 forest fires have already been...

When Matt and I went into business together I hadn't planned for it to go this way. Alder St. Fitness and Tanning, LLC was a dream of mine. I enjoyed running our business, seeing new faces and watching members achieve new goals. The smiles on their faces are what I enjoyed most about this business. Unfortunately, Matt and I grew further apart as Matt turned to abusive ways. I felt the great need to take my children to a safe and more positive place outside of Odessa. I had learned that Matt wasn't around and the gym wasn't...
I am sure that many of you receive questionnaires like I do. They want to know what you think the largest problems are that our federal government faces. We should be very concerned about our unfunded liabilities! We have Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and the Postal Retirement System, that are in deep trouble, as baby boomers reach retirement age. We have hundreds of thousands of veterans who will need medical care, after too many deployments to our 21st century wars. We have millions of children who have been born to...

Hi, here I am again. Continued from last week – the Kiesz Children….. Virgil remembers the following about living in the L-B-D: (10.) His dad had 14 horses; needed 12 of them when pulling heavy loads, deep plowing. His dad’s first tractor was a track-crawler type diesel. His dad’s first car, a used “rag top” Ford. Second car was a used “hard-top” with 4 doors, In 1934, the third car was a used Model-A-Ford/2 door and in 1939, it was his dad’s first “new” car - a Chevrolet with a small trunk attached at the rear. (11.) His d...
Last year, Fotis I. Antonopoulos, a successful Web designer in Athens, decided to set up his own e-business to sell olive oil products. It took him 10 months, winding his way through the city collecting dozens of forms and stamps of approval, including proof that he was up- to-date on his pension contributions, before he could get started. But, according to The New York Times, even that was not enough. In perhaps the strangest twist of all, his board members were required by...
I’ve been thinking about what I would want people to say about me at my funeral three years from now. Don’t start celebrating prematurely – I’m not dying, at least as far as I know. No, this is an exercise from a book called “Managing Your Mind, The Mental Fitness Guide,” by Gillian Butler, PhD and Tony Hope, MD. I think the theory is that if you want people to say something nice about you when you die, you need at least three years to set them up for it. I picked the book up...
There was much excitement early in April when Odessa High School’s debate team won the state championship and the right to represent Washington in the national forensic contests in 1937. Although it’s a forgotten activity, debate teams flourished among the high schools of the region, and Odessa often had a winning team. The national competition in 1837 took place the first week in May in Jacksonville, Ill., and if Odessa’s state champions were to attend, it would be up to the citizens of the community to send them there...
Byron Behne watches the grain markets for the Odessa Union Warehouse. 3/29/12: Apparently the markets weren’t willing to wait for a poor Friday report before breaking lower, as corn and wheat futures both tanked hard. It seems everyone’s pretty sure what the government’s going to have to say, and they weren’t willing to wait for confirmation before selling out. Exporters in Portland tucked tail and ran early, as soft white bids dropped 20 cents right off the bat, even when Chicago futures were only down a dime, then dropped a...

Odessa's got talent! What a great idea to have an all school musical. I can only imagine how much fun and hard work to get all those sets, which were so outstanding, as well as getting the students of all ages into the play. I enjoyed "Beauty and the Beast" as everyone did. Phyllis Weishaar Odessa PS - Who was that little shepherd boy? Editor's Note: The shepherd boy was played by second grader Drew Hardung, son of Joel and Danielle Hardung....
About 10,000 years ago Earth’s climate lurched from bitter Ice Age conditions to the much balmier time in which we live today. We don’t fully understand what caused that great climate shift, but we know it was near the time of that great temperature transition that people started to farm. And one of the crops people in some parts of the world learned to tend was wheat. In the Western world, our love affair with wheat is as intense as it is old. Peasants have lived on bre...

Another Odessa person was very nearly the victim of a scam recently, but fortunately for her she was cautious enough not to agree to giving out any money or trying to cash the fraudulent checks she was sent. Mary Van Rijn of Odessa often rents rooms in her home to those in need of low-cost housing. A friend convinced her to put an ad on Craigslist when one of the rooms became available for rent. She was soon contacted via email by a young woman who claimed to be someone who traveled a lot in her capacity as a worker for the R...
