The Reason We Fought I was once asked why I volunteered to go into the Army. After thinking about it for a moment, I gave this answer: Sir, nothing in this country should ever come free to anyone. Somebody’s got to pay for it, either in taxes or some other way, and sometimes even with some giving up our lives. Me, I would have given my life for it, but you see it isn’t up to us. It’s up to our Lord who lives or dies. But now in this country we are fighting about whether to stand or kneel. I have lost buddies fighting for t...

  • Survival in small town U.S.A. How do you do it?

    Linda Goodman|Updated Nov 17, 2017

This past summer I found myself sitting in the middle of a dirt road/driveway leading to a friend’s farmhouse listening. Listening to nothing, but then again listening to everything. The wind in the grass, the lowing of cattle and the sound of horses hoofs as they run from one location to another. There was no noise of passing cars, cell phones, stereos, televisions or that low electrical hum that you never notice until the power goes out. I was listening to nothing. N...

  • Letter to the Editor: Former pharmacist's views on marijuana

    Updated Nov 17, 2017

To the Editor: This is what web MD says about marijuana. Also a study out of New Zealand on young adults 17-21 showed that after 40 years the teens who continued to smoke pot had an IQ of 10% less than the teenagers who did not smoke pot. Marijuana reduces your incentive to achieve and work. To me, the bad far outweighs the good. Read on what the medical journal, Web MD, has to say about marijuana. Marshall Roberts, Wenatchee [Owner and pharmacist at Odessa Drug for 37 years] From WebMD: If you’ve ever smoked a joint or e...

  • Surveys shed light on local workforce issues

    Updated Nov 17, 2017

Davenport, WA, November 6, 2017 – It is getting tough to find good employees to fill open positions in Lincoln County. One reason is that a large portion of our workforce, 60 percent according to the Employment Security Department, commutes outside the county every day for work. This leaves only a small portion of our workforce to fill jobs here. But what are the consequences to the employer, and why are so many people commuting out? A recent survey of employers gives some insight on the first half of that question and a n...

You have probably noticed something new and different on the front page of this week’s issue. The Odessa Record has not run ads on its front page for many years, but our history shows that it has been done in the past. When Avista approached us with two ads they wanted to run in color in the same issue but not on the same page, we ran into logistical problems. As it turned out, the simplest way to solve them was to run one of the ads on the front page. It is not something we would normally do, but Avista has agreed to our t...
