Another beautiful day in paradise, and today I was privileged to have a wonderful visit with Lois Renken. She was born in 1933 in Kellogg, Idaho and grew up in Spokane Valley with her parents Mark and Esther Owen. In 1946, she moved with her parents to Moses Lake, where her father got a job as fire chief at Moses Lake Air Force Base, later known as Larson Air Force Base. When Lois was in the second half of her junior year in high school she moved again with her parents to...

Memorial Day last Monday was celebrated with the usual ceremony at the Odessa Cemetery and earlier in the day at Quail Court. Members of VFW Post #7395 and American Legion Post #105 were on hand to carry the flags, fire the 21-gun salute and present other parts of the program. These former service members, some of them in their eighties, still have the courage and feel the obligation to show their pride in their fellow veterans, especially those who made the ultimate...

The town council met Tuesday, May 29, for its regularly bi-monthly meeting. Since Monday was Memorial Day, the official date for the meeting was the following Tuesday. A public hearing was held regarding a permit for erection of a fence at 305 S. Second Street. Since Council members still had too many unanswered questions about the details of the fence, the issue was tabled with a request that the homeowner appear in person with the required information. Under public comment, town resident Gina Schlomer gave each member of...
Working toward Memorial Weekend In the month preceding Memorial Day, many people contact city hall and the library for information regarding their ancestors. Some of the recent inquiries resulted in the acquisition of the following biographies. Just prior to Cruizin’ Harrington, Jim Knapp asked for confirmation on the details of the purchase of the 1936 Plymouth coupe he entered in the car show and for which he won the “Participants Choice” award. Les LePere painted a lovely sign stating that the original owner had been...
To the Editor: In the world today people have lost the ability to be what we are supposed to be. As humans we have become selfish, materialistic and uncaring. We have stepped away from what God intended for us to be. He put us here to be kind, to take care of others and to be selfless. I have been lucky in my life to know and have in my life some very caring and selfless men. God has blessed me beyond belief and I want to let them know just what they have done for me and how much I love them all. The first one that came in to...

I have not been able to shake the overwhelming feeling of sadness that came over me that day, because the segment could easily have (turned out differently)been a different scenario it just would have t...
