Not all of the figures for Deutschesfest are in, but some information was available at Tuesday’s Chamber of Commerce meeting. Biergarten Chairman Ted Bruya and assistant chairman Justin Parr reported that the Biergarten gate receipts and kitchen sales were down somewhat from last year, meaning that fewer visitors likely came to Fest this year (something that most in Odessa had guessed based on their own observations). Due to an increase in prices instituted this year, h...
The Titan football team got their second win of the season last Friday afternoon, thrashing Selkirk by a score of 42-0. The game was played in Harrington and was one of the many events associated with the Harrington Fall Festival last weekend. The first of the Titans’ six touchdowns was made by Harrington junior Stetson Sanford on a nine-yard run into the end zone. Odessa quarterback Jared King ran the ball in again for the two-point conversion. King also made the next s...
The Odessa Parent-Teacher Organization bought T-shirts for all students in preschool through twelfth grade. They also bought shirts for all certified, classified staff and administrators. At registration, parents filled out shirt sizes for children, and two weeks later the shirts were delivered. Suzie Deife talked with the Harrington School District, which also provided shirts for the entire school, and “piggy-backed” on the same design. “The PTO raises funds for K-8, but we t...

Recently, President Obama ordered the Environmental Protection Agency to delay implementation of a new rule that further reduces industrial ozone emissions —smog — under the Clean Air Act (CAA). The announcement came on the same day new employment figures showed the economy had created no new jobs in August. With unemployment stuck above 9 percent and the economy teetering on the brink of a double-dip recession, President Obama decided the suggested benefits of the new rul...
Well. I got carried away. Miss Smarty-Pants, having so much fun and getting lots of positive feedback from her friends, has put her foot in it. You all know how it feels when you are attacked. A rush of adrenaline hits your system, causing your heart and respiration rates to increase. You may even feel a flutter in your digestive tract. It’s all a part of the “fight or flight” response. You can stand your ground and bare your teeth and take the chance of getting hurt. You c...
Sheriff's Report INCIDENT LOG Editor's note: Most items in this section reflect the starting point for response by local police and emergency agencies. The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office does not release names of individuals who report possible criminal or suspicious activities to dispatchers or alleged victims for this column. Friday night was a great opportunity for a nostalgia trip to the 1960s. At a fundraising concert for the Harrington Opera House Society (HOHS), the Soda Creek 3 folk trio played to a good-sized, appreciative audience. Paul Deuber, Jack Harroun and Stan Timperley provided a program of folk standards, as well as other songs, a couple of jokes and some good-natured bantering. Most numbers were performed by the trio to two guitars and upright bass, although there were a few...

The Harrington Fall Festival took place last weekend, with a football game Friday afternoon, a folk-music concert that same evening (see Lise Ott’s article on the concert, page 4), a parade on Saturday morning and throughout the afternoon alumni reunions of former Harrington High graduates. Lunch in the park included deep-pit barbecued beef sandwiches (with sides of potato salad, baked beans and chips), burgers, hot dogs and soft drinks. Vendors were selling alumni shirts, pie...
I’m always in a hurry, yes, I’m always flyin’ low. Makin’ ever’ minute count, when runnin’ to and fro. I follow a schematic, a mental blueprint in my mind. I insist there is an order, so I’m not runnin’ blind. Perfection is a must, though some don’t understand. No matter what the venture, everything must be well planned. I believe, yes, in self discipline, I live by a set of rules. I often whip and drive myself, unlike do many fools. I hate chaos and confusion, abhor things in disarray. I detest the slightest mayhem,...

When Ms. Ott, your roving reporter for The Odessa Record, belittles small communities, as I feel she did in her column of September 1, 2011, perhaps she should follow her own advice. In item #13 of her “big ideas for a small town” article she admonishes us to “not be mean spirited, as it is not helpful, and we should evaluate what we say before we say it.” She infers in her article that several of our small communities are resting on our laurels. I feel that is “mean spirited” and not helpful, when you don’t know the fact...

Odessa in October 1905 was emerging from a business district of all wooden frame buildings to one with solid brick structures. The second week in October, fire broke out in one of the new brick buildings and spread to some of the remaining frame store fronts, wiping out nearly a block of downtown businesses. This account of Odessa’s greatest fire, one which threatened the entire town, appeared in The Record on October 11, 1905: Odessa’s third and largest fire in history occurred just about midnight Monday. It started nea...
At Rep. McMorris Rodgers’ public forum in Davenport, one of several in August, too many regulations was the major concern. A local bureaucrat expressed frustration with micromanaging from Washington DC interfering with efficiency and effectiveness in delivering services. Public officials cited examples of unfunded mandates. A small business owner (me) complained about the daunting task of trying to create just one new job without getting sideways with some obscure rule. Did you know we have federal regulations defining an a...
After reading Bernie Sanders’ column last week, one has to think that this is what one writes when he wants more taxpayers’ money to waste on social programs. He makes it sound like this is the worst country in the world, that we have nothing but poor people and that they are worse off than the rest of the world. Here are some interesting facts about the poor in the U.S., which you will never hear or read in the main-stream media. “In a new report, Heritage's Robert Rector and Rachel Sheffield lay out what the U.S. gover...
