    As we go to press this week, harvest has yet to start within the closest environs of Odessa, although the station of the Odessa Trading Co. at Batum began receiving hard red winter wheat last week. This week, the stations at Moody and Ruff also began receiving hard red winter wheat, with one dryland field coming in at 60-61 bushels to the acre.     Walter Winter, an Odessa resident, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2017, at Prestige Care Center in Clarkston, Wash. Walt was born September 3, 1922, to Michael and Zelemia (Bohnet) Winter. He married Helen Baumgart on August 26, 1951, and together they had five children. Walt served in the U. S. Navy as a Fireman, First Class.     OLYMPIA – Attorney General Bob Ferguson has joined a federal lawsuit demanding that Environmental Protection Agency head Scott Pruitt complete a scientific safety review of the neurotoxic pesticide chlorpyrifos. Pruitt abruptly halted a review already underway earlier this year. According to the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, the EPA can allow the continued use of a pesticide at certain levels only if it finds that pesticide to be safe.     SEATTLE – Cell-phone users are excited that the prototype for a battery-free cell phone might mean they could cut the cord to their chargers in the future. But the developing technology also may be a boon for the environment.     GRANT COUNTY, WA – Grant County Health District staff are investigating 12 confirmed cases of pertussis (whooping cough), with additional tests pending. All confirmed cases are within the Ephrata and Moses Lake communities. None of the cases have been hospitalized. There is the potential for more cases to occur.
