1 years ago From The Odessa Record July 30, 1915 The biggest crop that the Odessa country has had in eight years, and probably the biggest in its history, is now being harvested, and the end of the week will see in the shock or headed practically wheat which is to be threshed. Wheat that is being cut with combines will not be in the sack for some time after this week, although these big machines are busy on all sides now. Reports from Harvest fields are so large and exceptional for this country as to be unbelievable, and...
Sheriff's Report Incident log Editor’s note: Most items in this section reflect the starting point for response by local police and emergency agencies. The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office does not release names of individuals who report possible criminal or suspicious activities to dispatchers or alleged victims for this column. Monday, July 20: Three callers observed a man walking along Interstate 90 near Sprague carrying a guitar case. Odessa firefighters responded to a fire in a summer fallow field adjacent to Fink Roa...
It took longer than any of us would’ve liked it to, but after 176 days and three special sessions, we were finally able to adjourn last week. Although we needed three special sessions, I am proud of many of the things we accomplished as a Legislature for the people of Washington state. My first session in Olympia truly exceeded my expectations. I made it my mission to build solid relationships with people on both sides of the aisle throughout the session, because I know how mu...
It has come to the attention of The Record that the newspaper and other types of mail and packages sometimes get misdirected. If any subscribers have had this happen, they know how annoying it can be. Most folks who find misdirected mail in their boxes return it to the postmaster who then corrects the error. Others, however, sometimes just toss out what does not belong to them or keep it for themselves. A postal patron recently told of having ordered an item through one of the large mail-order companies. It is possible that...
Summer Reading In spite of summer vacations, Bridget Rohner has managed to keep the statistics high with the attendance this fourth week at 15 children. The group began with the reading of a story, for which the children were very attentive. The major theme this week was the five senses and the children thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on approach. Each was given a piece of paper to record their answers regarding the bottled aromas that they were sniffing. Victoria Rice helped the children with the hearing test, where the...

Editor’s note: Ever wonder about the cat reference in the Dr. Universe column? Well, the good doctor is a feline, something we failed to mention when this column began running as a replacement for the Rock Doc column that preceded it. Below is a description of Dr. Universe as it appears on her website. Though the column is directed at children, we feel the information is useful to all. Hi, there. I’m Dr. Universe. Wendy Sue Universe, that is. Ever since I was a kitten, I’ve been digging in the dirt, gazing at the stars, explo...
The foot bridge across Crab Creek has become more than rickety these days. Many boards are cracked and loose. Others exhibit screws that have backed out of the wood by an inch in some cases. It seems that the looser everything gets, the more the bridge also becomes a target for kids and even some adults who do their best to make the bridge sway as much as possible while other people are trying to cross it. The swaying is likely one reason why the screws are becoming so loose. Some boards have even lost all of the screws at...
Several new alcohol- and marijuana-related laws became effective today. Among the new laws is a section of Senate Bill 5052, the Cannabis Patient Protection Act, which changes the name of the former Liquor Control Board. Effective immediately, the new name is the Liquor and Cannabis Board which reflects the regulatory responsibilities the agency has had since 2012. The name change is the first for the agency since it was established by the Steele Act on January 23, 1934.* “Having just passed the first anniversary of m...
The Odessa Town Council met Monday evening in the public library. Council member Lois Harp had submitted a letter of resignation from the council due to illness. It was accepted with regret by the other council members. Since it is too late for the position to appear on the ballot for the general election, the council will have to appoint someone to fill the position. Mayor Doug Plinski said that citizens are encouraged to send letters of interest (in the position) to the town clerk’s office. Cass Gebbers and Will Wolfe a...
The wheat harvest in the Odessa area is about 90 percent complete, and as most people suspected when harvest began, the outcome has been rather dismal. Overall dryland yields were down by about 40 to 50 percent overall, according to Mark Cronrath at the Odessa Trading Company, even lower than the initial reports at the beginning of harvest. For the second year running, yields have been below average. On top of that, the dollar has been strong lately, which tends to depress wheat prices. At the Odessa Union Warehouse, Pearson...
