Krupp was renamed Marlin 95 years ago Ninety-Five years ago this week, sentiment against Germany during the height of World War I caused the citizens of Krupp, Odessa’s neighboring town 18 miles to the west, to change the name of their community to Marlin. The following report is from The Odessa Record of 1918: For some time past, the patriotic citzens of Krupp have rankled in the thought that the name of their abiding place was christened after the home of the largest German gunworks, and there has been growing sentiment f...
For someone who will be 27 this month (August 28), Marcus Horak is truly an “old” soul. He is a kind, quiet, introspective guy…shy in some respects. Although imposing at 6’4” tall with a size 17 boot, he is a gentle, compassionate and caring guy. There to lend a helping hand to anyone who needs it, he admittedly has an issue saying “no” to anyone. This might account for why Marcus is currently on the school board, an EMT, a Freemason, a lifetime FFA alumni member, Chamb...
St. Joseph Catholic church is currently under construction as damage to the structure’s rafters required installation of a new roof. The problem was originally identified when it was noticed that the north wall was bowed and leaning out a bit. It was found that multiple rafters were broken. A new roof was put on about 10 years ago, and the insurance adjuster recently found there were three layers of shingles on the building. An engineer was hired to determine the cause of t...

I have been hard at work in recent years combating a significant disease of wheat. Stem rust is caused by a group of nasty fungal organisms that can infect wheat plants and devastate yields. In some cases up to 100% of the crop can be lost. That’s a disaster for farmers, obviously, but it’s also potentially an enormous problem for those of us who eat bread, hotcakes and muffins, and who want to keep such foodstuffs in our diet. The battle between stem rust and agr...
Many students in high-poverty schools perform poorly on state tests already. With Congress’s plan to cut food stamps for the poor, elderly, and disabled, schools nationwide will face much greater difficulties in educating hungry children. Then add the cost for technology to make Common Core testing possible. Many schools have trouble now connecting to the Internet, and others have many connections but terrible WiFi infrastructure. Systems have been known to crash on the day of testing, forcing students in mid-keystroke of a...
To the Editor: We have a huge problem that needs to be addressed. We have 31 million veterans in the United States and most of them are eligible for benefits. That means we have a huge unfunded liability! There ae 774,000 unemployed veterans and the most help they are getting comes from the business world and wealthy individuals. We have a high percentage of suicide among our group of veterans and many of the stories that have been told go back to not getting necessary care. There are 613 forms that have to be filled out. It...
Olympia: Attorney General Bob Ferguson and officials from Washington’s Lottery are bringing attention to lottery scams. Individuals and groups are calling and emailing victims on a more regular basis with the goal of tricking people into thinking they’ve won a lottery prize. The goal of lottery scammers is to convince victims to provide personal information or pay fake “processing fees” and “taxes” through a wire transfer or money order. In most cases, if the scam is successful, the money can’t be recovered, as many lottery...

Opera House Progress For the past seven years the Harrington Opera House has used spotlights or work lights for the stage lighting depending on the type of performance to be given. The Opera House Society obtained two grants to cover the expense of the first phase of new stage lighting. These grants, the Florence Wasmer grant (a part of the Inland Northwest Community Foundation) and The Building For the Arts Grant from Washington state (the largest share), covered the expense of the parts and installation of two of the six...
