  • First annual Farm - to Table dinner a success

    Updated Oct 3, 2014

This past Saturday, the Big Red Barn Farmers Market in Davenport hosted a Farm-to-Table event. Local chefs, Adam Hegsted and Aaron Fish prepared a five-course meal in which all the food was provided by market vendors and travelled no more than 45 miles to the table. The event was hosted in the historic Big Red Barn two miles east of Davenport. The barn is listed on the National Historic Barn Registry and was restored by Davenport native, Crayton Guhlke. To say the dinner was...

The Lions Club members were in the city park at their barbeque pit. Water was being applied to the field east of the school bus garage in preparation for the early Saturday mud...

  • State's poet Laureate coming to Odessa

    JEFFERSON ROBBINS|Updated Oct 3, 2014

Elizabeth Austen feared letting her poetry loose in public, until she realized she was just its channel. A stage actor for years before turning wholesale to the written word, the Seattle poet never endured stage fright when speaking lines from other writers. It was only her own work that scared her when she tried to give it voice. “My mouth would go dry, my knees would shake, and it troubled me,” says the Seattle poet, 48. “I couldn’t figure out why it was so completely different to perform my own work.” Then, an epiphany...

  • Market Perspective

    PEARSON BURKE|Updated Oct 3, 2014

Wheat markets, especially the futures markets, have remained under pressure the last few weeks. Increasing world supplies, a record upcoming corn harvest and a stronger U.S. dollar have encouraged speculative funds to increase their short positions in the Chicago wheat futures to nearly 400 million bushels. World wheat prices have also been pressured by aggressive pricing out of the Black Sea, as the unrest between the Ukraine and Russia has weakened both of their currencies, making their exports even cheaper, relative to the...

  • Excellence in agriculture to be recognized at Ag Expo

    Updated Oct 3, 2014

Everyone involved in our agricultural industry has benefitted from individuals and groups who have made extraordinary contributions to the industry. It can be as far reaching as Dr. Norman Borlaug who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 for his work in wheat genetics. That research is credited with helping to feed a hungry world and starting the “Green Revolution.” Or it can be local with researchers who made discoveries in the use of Variable Rate Technology for fertilizer applications or one of our local producers who...

  • Rock Doc

    DR E KIRSTEN PETERS|Updated Oct 3, 2014

Plants are not as dumb as they look. At least to me, plants have never seemed like the brightest bulbs in the box. They stand around, looking green, hoping for a sunny day but not able to walk, talk or turn on the TV. However, due to a recent university press release, I’ve got to rethink my attitudes about vegetation. Two scientists at the University of Missouri, Heidi Appel and Rex Cocroft, studied a plant called Arabidopsis. That’s a common experimental plant, used by res...

  • Superintendent's Corner

    SUELLEN WHITE|Updated Oct 3, 2014

Recently I had to make a decision that I didn’t want to make. I knew the decision to never have a school-sponsored bonfire again would be very unpopular. Previously, our insurance company warned schools about this type of event, which has a very high risk for injury and property damage. We continued to have bonfires anyway, assuming we could do it safely. With all of the adults who participate in the event, we felt it was a tradition we did not want to alter. Last spring, the bonfire was tampered with by having someone put p...

  • Letter to the Editor; Setting the record straight on use of executive sessions

    Updated Oct 3, 2014

To the Editor: In recent weeks, I’ve watched as several letter were submitted regarding a Grant County Republican Party executive board special meeting that was held at the request of then GCRP chairman Tom Dent. Some who have voiced opinions were not even there when it happened but have seemingly developed opinions based upon hearsay, rumor or gossip. As a result, I write this letter with the hope of clearing up some of the facts. At the time, I was the Commissioner District 1 Chair for the GCRP and as such was a member of t...
