  • This Week in Odessa History

    Updated Oct 6, 2011

In 1916, there were no cross-state highways in Washington. The road through Odessa, known as the North Central Highway, extended from Davenport to Vantage Ferry, and the Sunset Highway went through from Spokane to Wenatchee. That year, there was talk of forming a “good roads association,” to promote the development of a better transportation system. The Record carried this article 95 years ago in its issue of October 6: The Record advocated last week a Good Roads Association The plea was made simply on general principles and...

  • A fond farewell in the grace Christ offers each of us

    Rev Barry Warpness, Zion-Emanuel Lutheran Church|Updated Oct 6, 2011

The cards were being dealt and sometimes in the heat of the game it takes some time to sort out the diamonds from the hearts and the spades from the clubs as the colors of red and black become a blur. Such is the case with our lives at times. At this moment in time, it appears this will be my last article for “The Record”, as my health situation is under a total medical disability and I am not working. So for “the record” I remind you one and all that we are under the curse o...

  • Reality of world competition for factory owners

    Don C Brunell|Updated Oct 6, 2011

In today’s dog-eat-dog world, change is constant and accelerating. Other countries are stealing our factories and jobs and are hungry for more. That is the new reality. For example, in the 1990s, a California-based company called FormFactor developed a new and faster way to test semiconductors, the heart of today’s computers. Chipmakers needed assurance their products operate efficiently, consistently and have long-term durability. FormFactor was founded by a Ukrainian imm...

  • Advice from a small town girl

    Lise Ott|Updated Oct 6, 2011

This is my favorite time of the year. It’s the time of year that is somehow linked with my memories of it finally being cool enough to wear those new school clothes. There’s something really satisfying about going out to the now-finished garden, cleaning up the beds, digging the spuds, preparing for the winter and, in so doing, the spring. There’s a sense of relief that I will have a few months off from moving sprinklers, remembering to water the flowerpots, and weeding. I lov...

  • BBCC enrollment down from last year's record high

    Updated Oct 6, 2011

Fall quarter 2011 full-time equivalent (FTE) enrollment dropped 9.6 percent at Big Bend Community College compared to 2010. By headcount--all students taking at least one class--enrollment is down 12.6 percent from fall 2010, according to college officials. Long waiting lists and fewer class offerings were the norm for BBCC students this fall. The college did not open new sections to meet demand due to state budget restrictions. Classes with low enrollment were canceled. BBCC set a fall quarter enrollment record in 2010 with...

  • Letter to the Editor: Reader looks forward to words from small-town girl

    Updated Oct 5, 2011

When I received The Odessa Record on Saturday and got to the second page I saw a letter to the editor attacking Lise Ott on an article that she wrote on Sept. 1 that hurt someone from Harrington. I have said in the past that the first thing I read in the paper is the history, but not anymore, as I enjoy the stories that Lise writes. So I read them first. I have been racking my brain trying to remember what was said, but no luck. But I am sure if it had been something terrible I would have remembered it. We live in a small...

  • Sound off, Odessa!

    Patti Jarschke|Updated Oct 5, 2011

Do college athletes deserve to be paid? ESPN reporter Michael Wilbon used to argue against it, thinking that tuition, room, board and books were compensation enough. And even if it wasn’t enough, the idea of pay-for-play would at best be considered a logistical nightmare. “Where would the money come from? How could you pay college football players but not baseball players or members of the women’s field hockey team? And how in the world would you pay men in a way that would...

  • Rock Doc

    Dr E Kirsten Peters|Updated Oct 5, 2011

I spent this past summer trudging through six-mile treks each weekend with two good friends. We walked along the edge of wheat fields outside of town. (My friends and I qualify as middle-aged ladies, so the walks counted as significant exercise. Sad but true.) One of the interesting things about the walks was simply observing the growth and ripening of the wheat fields by which we passed. We depend on wheat for bread, pasta, animal feed, noodles and – perhaps most i...

  • Tebow travels to D.C. with Honor Flight

    Lise Ott|Updated Oct 5, 2011

When asked how he heard about Honor Flight, Lloyd Tebow replied, “Well, we were over at Barb’s ( Tebow’s daughter, Barb Greenwalt), and she asked if I’d like to go. I said ‘well, I can’t do that.’ Tyler (Tebow’s grandson) was over messing around with some game on the TV and he found the form on the website and filled it out for me.” When his application was received, he was 139th on the waiting list. After about 7 months, Tebow was notified that he would be a part of the Inl...

  • WA minimum wage soon to rise above $9 an hour

    Chris Thomas|Updated Oct 5, 2011

The minimum wage in Washington state goes up 37 cents January 1, 2012 to $9.04 an hour. Washington is one of only 10 states that ensure by law that their minimum wage keeps up with inflation, which was calculated at just over 4 percent this year. Whenever there’s a minimum wage hike, some employers claim the extra cost will put them out of business. But that has not happened, says John Schmitt, a senior economist with the Center for Economic Policy Research, who studies wage trends since the 1930s. “What the evidence see...

  • Board allows sixth-graders to "play up"

    Updated Oct 5, 2011

Several parents attended the regularly scheduled Odessa School District board meeting September 28 to express support for a change in athletic policy. According to the majority, Odessa is the only 1B school that does not allow sixth-graders to “play up” to junior-high level athletics. They contend that since Odessa is now participating in an athletic cooperative, both schools should follow the same guidelines. Support was not unanimous, however. One parent delivered a petition signed by 7th and 8th graders protesting the cha...
