A project of the Odessa Chamber of Commerce, spearheaded by Deutschesfest food chair Lindsy Starkel, the upgrade will result in a large, commercial-grade kitchen which can be rented by community groups for Fest food preparation, used...
The Odessa-Harrington Titans football team played its final home game of the season last Friday, October 26. It was also Senior Night, so all of the senior-class members of the team and their parents were recognized, as was the sole senior member of the cheerleading squad. The Titans defeated Soap Lake by a score of 62-20. Although the game was lopsided, there was never enough of a spread to invoke the mercy rule, and the game went on for all four quarters on a damp and cold...

Four children were born during their married life –Alvin D. in 1931, Marvin in 1932 and the twins Marciel & Maurice in 1933. The Frederick school was closed prior to 1931, therefore from 1931 to 1951, the children of Reuben & Elizabeth – Alvin D., Marvin, Marciel and Maurice attended the schools in Odessa while living with their parents on the Lin...

On October 2, 2012 The Grant County Health District (GCHD) received confirmation from the Washington State Department of Health Public Health Laboratory (DOH) that the death of a Grant County woman was likely caused by the hantavirus. The woman was most likely exposed to the virus in her RV located south of Moses Lake. This is the second hantavirus-related death in Grant County this year. The two cases are not linked and do not indicate an increased risk to the public. "The Health District staff and I are saddened by her...

Democrats swept to victory in usually heavily Republican Odessa in 1932, with Franklin D. Roosevelt running for his first term, being the overwhelming choice in the residential race and the governorship going to Clarence D. Martin, a Cheney flour mill operator. The Great Depression was at its peak, and Odessa voters had sought a change in leadership as a means of getting the economy back in order. Roosevelt had promised this with his New Deal. Here is the report of the 1932 election in Odessa from the November 11 issue of...

I know this will come as a huge surprise to most of you. I have a character flaw. “Only one?” (I can hear you, you know.) Only one that I’m willing to talk about today. We’ll save the others for another time. Or other times, as it will probably take several. This particular character flaw became apparent (again) Sunday night, as we were participating in our annual pumpkin-carving party at a friend’s house. (We started this tradition years ago and have maintained it through s...

Byron Behne watches the international grain markets for the Odessa Union Warehouse. 10/25/12: Wheat prices fell Thursday as traders took profits off the previous day’s rally on confirmation of the Ukraine banning exports in mid-November. Export sales of wheat for last week totaled 21 million bushels, which was decent and most likely due to that business to the unknown destination done at the end of the week. New crop white wheat prices are at the strongest basis levels that I've ever seen for this time of year, with P...
To the Editor: Living on the west coast the voters have a problem of feeling rejected or unimportant as the electoral process doesn’t count the individual votes and so far too many of us stay at home and don’t vote. I can remember driving home from work and hearing the radio telling me that the national press has determined by exit polls that we have a new president. We need to try harder to break our old habits and vote, because there are other races that are important. Many of these races are important and I believe tha...
Last week an independent voter shared with me a concern that some people fear that socialism (business run by government) will ruin America. So let us first examine two definitions – one for capitalism, and one for socialism – as these seem to be the foundation for the concerns being voiced today. In very broad strokes, capitalism is based on private business dominating the economy for the purpose of generating wealth for the owners or stockholders by extracting it from working people who are paid only a small fraction of...
Vacation was a word rarely used in my house growing up. Like most parents in Eastern Washington during the 1900s, my mom and dad instilled the values of hard work from sunup to sundown. And when I co-wrote the script for the film “The Basket,” I showed the hardships endured by those generations before us to keep the family farm alive. Back then, as it is now, it often took the whole community to come together through back-breaking work, cooperation and even some help from the local banker to keep the business going and foo...

The regular meeting of the Odessa School Board on October 24 once again drew several parents and at least one grandparent of preschool-age children. At the previous month’s meeting, they had requested an additional day of preschool for their three-year-olds. The schedule originally set up by the ECEAP (Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program) had Odessa’s four-year-olds having three days of preschool and a group of older three-year-olds having two days of preschool. The youngest three-year-olds had only one day of...
