  • Welcome to My Kitchen

    Laura Estes|Updated Nov 8, 2012

Several requests for sugar free recipes have come in over the past two weeks. The holiday baking season is fast approaching, and folks who have recently been diagnosed with diabetes or pre-diabetes are struggling to find suitable recipes to replace traditional sweets. I have found that it is best to use recipes developed by the sugar free sweetener companies, as each product is a bit different, and none of them cook up the same as granulated beet or cane sugar. • This Week in Odessa History

    Updated Nov 8, 2012

A barbed fence which had been put up across Pacific Lake in 1922 was cause for a lawsuit that went all the way to the state Supreme Court. Ninety years ago this week, the court upheld the decision that the lake was navigable and its waters were open to all. The fence had to be removed. The Odessa Record reported the case in its issue of November 10, 1922: Pacific Lake is a navigable body of water. The Supreme Court of the State of Washington has declared it so. This decision, which was recently received by attorney W.M....

  • Goetz retirement holds surprises and mysteries

    Jeanie Goetz|Updated Nov 8, 2012

Moving to Odessa for our retirement has not been what we expected. The people here have been wonderful. It is great to be with family again. 'But' when Dr. Powell had Tom flown out in "lifebird" on a warm and moonlit August night, I had no idea what was in store for us as a family. Stroke had not been a part of the retirement plan. The stroke was bad. As I drove back and forth every day to Spokane for 2 and a half months, I saw my husband deteriorate before my eyes. The neurologist took me to the side and said, "I don't know...

  • How to become a superstar student, part 9

    Duane Pitts|Updated Nov 8, 2012

In our last installment, Michael Geisen offered ideas about research. This week, we will examine some of his ideas about writing well about the research you found. Good writing is simply making clear your ideas to someone else. Regardless of your learning style, clear writing is essential. Thus, the words you use have not only literal meanings, but also emotional impact on the reader. Words like “war,” “secret,” “love” “home” and “prickle” evoke moods, memories, and physical sensations. Choosing the right word can increase t...

    Updated Nov 8, 2012

Head girls volleyball coach Ken Scherr was named the volleyball coach of year in a ceremony at the conclusion of the NE District 1B volleyball tournament in Colton last Saturday, one of the many accolades he has received in his long coaching career. Scherr had happily retired from both teaching and coaching a couple of years ago, when the new Odessa-Harrington athletic co-operative found itself unable to find a head volleyball coach. Not one to let down all those enthusiastic...

Open auditions were held in Spokane in late September. Ireland auditioned with hundreds of kids vying for only a few roles. After a two-hour audition, she was cast as one of t...

  • Advice from a small town girl

    Updated Nov 7, 2012

I guess it’s time for an update on my health quest. I’d really rather not. I’d rather not partly because of the many unrealistic expectations I place on myself. Every day. Instead of celebrating the 23 pounds I’ve lost, I feel as though I owe everyone else in the world an explanation as to why it hasn’t been 40. Or more. The “smart” part of me knows that’s just dumb. The “dumb” part of me feels guilty for not being more successful. That’s the part that seems to have the upper hand most of the time. The part where all those...

  • Weekly grain report

    Updated Nov 7, 2012

Byron Behne watches the grain markets for the Odessa Union Warehouse. 10/31/12: Egypt bought Romanian, French and (surprise!) Russian wheat on their overnight tender as the U.S. was skunked again. However our wheat wasn’t nearly as far out of the ballpark as it used to be. Chicago wheat futures rallied on the day but gave back half of their gains by the close. Still no pattern-breaking news. The U.S. winter wheat crop starts out its life in slightly worse condition than last year’s did, which was on the low end of his...

  • Letter to the Editor: Looming debt-limit cause for concern

    Updated Nov 7, 2012

To the victor go the spoils! A hard, poorly fought battle is finally over! I think most of us would have preferred to have heard more positive comments and ideas about how we are going to climb out of this bottomless pit. However, President Obama ran ads on the east coast that we were not worthy of hearing and Mr. Romney and Ryan decided to drop down to that level of campaigning. What ever happened to “planks” that the parties built their platforms on during the conventions? The treasurey announced on 10-31-12 that we wil...

  • Rock Doc

    Dr E Kirsten Peters|Updated Nov 7, 2012

Some say it’s the most complicated machine we’ve ever built. We rely on it not just each day, but each moment of each day. It reaches into our homes, factories, offices and stores. And at times it’s surprisingly fragile and subject to massive failure. I’m talking about the electrical grid. We’ve recently seen it tested by Superstorm Sandy. And I’ve been reading up on it in several sources, including an interesting book appropriately called The Grid by Phillip F. Schewe. I t...

Veterans Day is Sunday, November 11, and on that day the members of Odessa VFW Post #7395, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the members of Odessa’s American Legion Post will serve up their annual turkey dinner/potluck. As usual, the groups will supply the turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy and a hot vegetable, while salads and desserts are provided by the guests. The only thing different about this year’s event is that it will take place in the Old Town Hall rather than in what used to be called the VFW Building. The...

  • State’s minimum wage will increase to $9.19 next year

    Updated Nov 7, 2012

Washington’s minimum wage will increase to $9.19 per hour beginning January 1, 2013, the Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) has announced. L&I calculates the state’s minimum wage each year as required by Initiative 688, approved by Washington voters in 1998. The 15-cent-per-hour increase, from $9.04 to $9.19 an hour, reflects a 1.67 percent increase in the Consumer Price Index (for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, CPI-W) announced earlier this month by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The CPI-W measur...
