City Council The Harrington City Council met at city hall November 16 for a public hearing on the preliminary budget for 2018. This past Wednesday, November 15, Odessa students ranging from third through eighth grades competed in Ritzville against eight other Bi-County schools for the 2017 Bi-County Academic Contest in the categories of Spelling, Math, Speech and Geography. A few weeks ago, Odessa High School Junior Megan Shafer submitted an application to become one of Washington state's Aerospace Scholars and on November 25, 2017 Megan found out she was selected. Washington Aerospace Scholars is an educational program for high school juniors from across Washington state. We are in the season of Thanksgiving as far as the calendar goes. To me, giving thanks is an everyday thing, as I take in the wonder and beauty around me. To the Editor: The GOP tax plan will crush the middle class, and it will decimate students’ educations. Cathy McMorris Rodgers won’t even address the bill with her own constituents. She certainly won’t address education because of the damage she is inflicting on our next generation. To the Editor: Avista spends THEIR money advertising OUR electric service cost as “33% lower than the national average.” Duh!; so what? Here’s what! A more local comparison puts our residential cost nearly 300 percent HIGHER than Wenatchee’s (9.3 vs. 3.2 cents/kwh, respectively). But, so much for the ridiculous comparisons. Questions of federal vs. state laws on the question of marijuana use and how the answers to them might affect the Odessa Industrial Park were of concern to several members of the Odessa Public Development Authority last month after hearing from a potential tenant for a vacant building in the park. The Odessa Chamber of Commerce met November 14 at noon at Any Occasion Banquet Hall with only a small band of members present. A final report on the proceeds from September’s Deutschesfest was provided by treasurer Larissa Zeiler. Once all the bills were paid and all the revenue streams were counted, the official profits from the festival came to just about $6,000. Odessa police are investigating a suspected case of vandalism from October 26 at the main water reservoir on the south hill near the large, lit “O” also located there. The public works crew had received an alarm indicating that communication with the reservoir had been lost. The telemetry antenna atop the reservoir was found to have collapsed onto the roof.
