I don’t know about you, but I know that I have more questions than answers. And the questions I have are persistent and demanding. Things like, “Are men born knowing how to spit?” “How many roads must a man walk down?” “How much fossil fuel can we take out of the earth before everything falls in?” “Where am I going and why am I in this handbasket?” And one that’s been bugging me for several years, “Who defines the American dream?” Marriage to a politically active pers...
The Titan girls varsity basketball team led by 10 at half-time, only to face what looked like a completely different team in the third quarter. Davenport 10 10 29 13 -62 O-H 12 18 6 6 -42 The Lady Gorillas from Davenport came storming back, pounding the Titans 29-6 in the third quarter alone to take the lead by a large margin. They never relinquished it. The O-H girls gave the ball away far too many times with bad passes and unnecessary fouls. They are a very young team,...
The game started off with a stroke of luck for the Titans, when a Davenport player grabbed and popped the basket rim during warmups. That is against the rules, and a technical foul was assessed against Davenport. O-H 4 4 8 16 -32 Davenport 10 17 16 14 -57 It was pretty much all Davenport’s game after that. What scoring there was by the Titan team was led by Markus Smith with 7, followed by Justin Hunt and Cade Weber with 6 each, Nick Tebow with 5, Jared King 4, and Brett L...

Big Bend Community College is the recipient of the Governor’s 2011 Best Practices Award for its innovative program to help farm workers move from the field to behind the wheel of a commercial truck. The Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (I-BEST) uses the model of two instructors in the classroom – one teaching professional and technical content while the other supports development of basic reading, math or language skills. The program has prepared more than 150 low-wage workers for higher-wage, in-demand tra...
Washington State Governor Gregoire’s budget proposals for the start of the special legislative session that began November 28, 2011 are devastating to the state’s most vulnerable populations, says the Family Resource Center in Davenport. The magnitude of the recommended cuts will mean drastic reductions in the critical services and resources that programs are already working beyond their capacity to provide. Ultimately, what is at stake is the safety and well-being of our communities. “The erosion of human services and commu...

As expected Neah Bay played its game almost exclusively on the ground. After receiving the kickoff, the opening offensive drive took the Red Devils 77 yards in 11 plays before the quarterback, Josiah Greene, dove into the endzone from the one-yard line. I urge your readers to contact their members of Congress who are discussing whether to extend the Bush tax cuts. If those payroll tax cuts are not continued, then those who take home a paycheck need to get ready to lose 2% of each paycheck beginning January 2012. According to Senator Patty Murray, “the median Washington family has a yearly income of $56,479. Under the current 2% payroll tax cut, that family is saving approximately $1,130 per year on their tax bill. If the current tax cut expires, their yearly tax bill will g...
As the long season of darkness sweeps over the country, it’s a natural time to think about lighting – and how dependent we are on electricity during this dim time of year. You can heat your home with several different energy sources, including natural gas, heating oil or wood. But unless you’re living off-the-grid, the lights throughout your abode burn brightly because of electricity from the grid. Yes, I have a couple of candles, a flashlight and two kerosene lamps in my ho...

Just about the time the Congressional “Super Committee” declared failure, our national debt clock rolled past $15 trillion. Even as the discussions, co-chaired by Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., ground to a halt and Congress left the Capitol for Thanksgiving, the debt clock kept ticking. That means each taxpayer’s portion of our debt is now $133,687. Where will this all stop? Are we headed for another partisan meltdown over raising our debt ceiling? Will we see another downg...
Editor’s note: The Record’s story on shopping locally for Christmas continues this week. Maybe doing your Christmas shopping in Odessa won’t let you buy that newest expensive electronic toy you’ve seen advertised on TV, but it could provide some unexpected bonuses: you’d get to exercise your creativity, a part that goes unnoticed and un-nurtured all too often, and your community would receive the benefit of your economic support. The college student or young adult on your list might enjoy an on-line subscription to The Odess...
A weekly review of incident reports on file at the Odessa Town Marshal’s office has raised a potential safety concern for residents. An individual has reported aggressive behavior demonstrated by a dog at large, apparently a pit bull or pit bull mix. The person filing the complaint indicated that the reported incident was actually the third time he/she had been menaced by the dog, but that a complaint had not been previously filed, as the person did not want to cause problems for neighbors. The dog in question is reported t...
