Odessa Record subscriber Larry Fisher of Spokane continues his series of articles on the history of the Batum/Lauer area (where his wife, the former Joyce Kiesz, grew up.) Hi, here I am again. Continued from last week “The Schibels.” Don told me “his father changed over to the tractor around 1935 when farming started to improve.” By 1936, farming was better and in 1939 when WWII started, the crops were very good and the price was a lot better than it had been for quite a while. The “Great Depression” was over. In a 1935 TOR...
Odessa’s town council voted to approve a budget of $1,579,553 at their December 12 meeting. Council members have been working on the budget for approximately three months. Mayor Doug Plinski distributed a letter from Okanogan County, providers of Odessa’s senior meals program. The letter stated that, due to reductions in funding and declining attendance at the meals, the program would be reduced to two days per week beginning in 2012. Okanogan County requested the council to...

Based on the numbers, Christmas Fest 2011 was even more successful than last year’s event. A total of 275 people signed in at the door to be eligible for the 32 available door prizes (see box for winners’ names). Names of winners were drawn throughout the day. In 2010, 216 had signed in for a chance at one of 20 prizes. There may have been others who visited but did not bother to sign in, but the number was nevertheless a good indicator of the crowd size. Of the 32 door pri...
One person dies every 19 minutes, unintentionally, from prescription drug abuse. Another staggering statistic: one in five teens has abused prescription medications. Generation Rx, a group stemming from the American Public Health Association, is an initiative that has been put together to prevent the misuse and abuse of prescription medications. Generation Rx and Washington State University's School of Pharmacy have teamed up to do something about this growth epidemic. There will be a presentation about prescription...

O-H vs. Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Just like the first, the second basketball game of the season was also against a tough 2B school, Lind-Ritzville/Sprague. The Broncos overpowered the Titans for the win, but there was some good news from the coach despite the loss. O-H 11 12 19 16 -58 LRS 19 21 14 20 -74 Head coach Travis Schuh said, “OH had a big improvement from last game. We shot a lot better at 40% and 72% from the free-throw line. We were down by 17 at half, but only lost b...
O-H vs. Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Once again, the girls varsity had difficulty against a larger school. After staying close throughout the first half, the third quarter was rude awakening from the Broncos. LRS 13 6 18 6 43 O-H 8 2 7 11 28 Odessa’s Charli Moffet led the Titan scoring with 10, Jessie Whitaker added 8, Kendall Todd and Jordyn Tanke had 3 each and Chelsea Fisher and Cydnee Kieffer had 2 each. Rebekah Marshall, Hannah Schmidt, Carley Williams and Ashley Baarstad a...
The Odessa-Harrington Titans girls basketball team opened the season with games against the Davenport Gorillas and Lind/Ritzville-Sprague Broncos. Despite losing both games to the larger schools, there were a lot of positive signs that the team is on the right track. Against Davenport, the Titans were able to come out strong and played terrific defense in the first half, forcing numerous turnovers which led to fast-break opportunities, giving Odessa-Harrington a 30-20 half time lead. Against the Broncos, the girls started...
1 Years Ago From The Odessa Record December 15, 1911 Just now the small boy has something to think of besides play. His is busy enumerating his many wants for Christmas, and already the shadow of Santa Claus is looming up in the homes. December is a long month. The days are short and the nights long. But with the expectancy and planning for the great day to come, it soon passes, and almost before we know it, Christmas is here. May yours be a happy one. 75 Years Ago From The Odessa Record December 17, 1936 The city well has...
The more we learn about animals, the more complex and interesting is the behavior they exhibit. My faithful mutt-from-the-pound, a dog named Buster Brown, impresses me from time to time with complex behaviors aimed at getting what he wants out of me. Most people who live with animals can tell you a tale or two of diabolical - or thoughtful - animal behavior they've witnessed. But even knowing all that, a recent study on lab rats took me by surprise. The research makes it...
Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat . . . And so am I. It’s odd. Not that I’m gaining weight during what has, relatively recently, become a season of excess. Excess blessed by retailers, Wall Street, the government, the media, and perhaps most of all –China. Now, I frequently say that “everything to excess” is my personal motto. I’ve lived in that mode for a long time, regardless of employment or income. But always lingering in the corner of my mind is that little...
Byron Behne watches the grain markets for the Odessa Union Warehouse. 12/7/11: Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. Grain prices backed up, as concern developed that Germany wasn’t on board with all aspects of the new European bailout plans. Japan’s in for western white. Egypt bought Russian and Argentine wheat earlier in the week. Friday the USDA drops another supply and demand report in our laps. The concern is they will further reduce projected demand numbers and correspondingly increase grain ending stocks. 12/8/...
With the European debt crisis dominating the news and threatening to pull the world into a double-dip recession, there are growing calls for Uncle Sam to come to the rescue. The U.S. is already committing untold billions to the $1.4 trillion European bailout fund, but that’s not enough, according to some European leaders and even U.S. politicians. They say that while the EU bailout is costly, it’s also necessary. They are only right about the cost. These endless bailouts are not only unnecessary, but are in fact dan...
There is a brighter side to Christmas this year, despite the weak economy and lawmakers bickering over how to patch the $2 billion hole in the state’s budget. The good news comes from Boeing. Boeing and its machinists recently ratified a new four-year contract which averts a strike through 2016. Even though the plum in the pudding was the accompanying announcement that Boeing would produce its new 737 MAX at its Renton plant, the agreement has much broader significance. Early ratification of a labor agreement is hugely i...
