Thanksgiving menus are on the minds of many area cooks. Turkey, beef roast, ham, or a combination? What sides and desserts will fit in range and refrigerator space? What oven dishes will cook in the meat standing time? Fresh turkeys should be kept refrigerated until ready to use. If you are brining a turkey, keep the brining bird refrigerated. A frozen turkey will need to be thawed under refrigeration, beginning 4 to 5 days before use, depending on size. Be sure to put a pan...
Summer and fall can stake their claim as road trip season, and even devoted drivers may admit that winter is generally a less desirable time to take to the open road. The elements factor heavily into that reputation, as fewer hours of daylight, snow and ice are just some of the variables that can make it less enjoyable, and potentially more dangerous, to drive in winter. In anticipation of adverse driving conditions, vehicle owners can take various steps to prepare their cars and trucks for winter. Upgrade your wiper blades....

Winterizing your car entails more than just getting the studded tires out of the garage and rushing to have them installed. According to some commentators, there are a few basic preparations a driver should make before venturing out in the snow. Checking tire pressure every morning before you leave: Tire pressure tends to fluctuate with falling temperatures, even if your car is sheltered. That can result in reduced traction and deformities in the tire. Is your windshield wiper fluid rated for forecasted temperatures?...
ODESSA– 82 years have passed since World War II began, and with each year, first-hand accounts of war stories are becoming a rarity as veterans who served in the war are now in their 90s. "I joined the Navy because that is what my father wanted." Wood served on the USS Iowa, which is now a retired w...

Casseroles are perfect for fall days. Fragrant and warm from the oven, they make for cozy evening meals. Casseroles that are quick to fix or easy to prepare ahead are a boon to area cooks. With some area eating establishments closing for the winter and others shutting down permanently, I have been getting requests for ideas of what to fix when you can’t fill in with take out. Cheeseburger Rice, a recipe I found on the Minute Rice box nearly 30 years ago, is one of my go to mai...
