To the Editor: The animosity expressed by tone of voice, facial expressions and questions about undocumented people (i.e., illegal aliens) at political meetings amazes me. I attended a Conversations with Cathy meeting in Medical Lake in October 2018, when disdain for the undocumented was expressed by one woman who shouted out “Build that Wall,” and others appeared to agree. On February 21, I attended another Conversations with Cathy meeting in Medical Lake. After Representative McMorris Rodgers’s opening remarks, the first...
To the Editor: I am writing as a member of the Odessa Historical Society, asking for your help. Our local museum began with much volunteer help many years ago, just as it continues to run today. It has weathered a devastating fire and was rebuilt to be what it is today. We have two main fundraisers per year in which we send postcards to members of the community. One is for the yearly dues. The other is for community baked goods or monetary donations for the annual Deutschesfest Bake Sale. I consider one of the fundraisers...
They only come out at night! They hide inside, so they can’t be seen during the day, like the vampires they are. They don’t suck your blood, but they will make you bleed when they strike. They poke their heads out from time to time like little ground hogs looking to see if the coast is clear, waiting for dark. Is anyone watching? They strike when we’re asleep at night or gone. They will leave you in fear, because they have violated your space. They’re easy to spot walking around late at night in dark colors and/or with co...
To the Editor, I appreciate receiving The Record weekly. The inclusion of Harrington and Mohler old and new news is especially appreciated. (Marjorie Womach is a Mohler friend. Her mother, Elizabeth Womach Dammel, was my piano teacher when we were neighbors. I still play piano weekly at nursing homes and care centers in Portland, Ore. and Sandy, Ore.) My son, daughter and I drove to Odessa, Lamona, Downs, Mohler, Harrington and Spokane recently. Our Odessa visit included decorating six family plots with flowers (my brother...
Another 4th of July in Odessa, and I believe the people with illegal fireworks went all out. Now I know that some are unaware that fireworks that go “bang” or fly in the air and go “bang” are illegal, and there are others that do know it’s wrong. What I don’t know is whether anyone cares if it causes a problem for someone with PTSD or to the animals that shake with fright or run away. Not to mention the liability it causes if there is a fire or damage to homes or people. With that said, I wonder if we are experiencin...
(Davenport, WA July 1, 2019) Lincoln County municipal leaders, public works staff, and contract water system operators came together recently to talk about the challenges of maintaining their water and wastewater systems. Besides the infrastructure in many of our communities being close to 100 years old, they face the state’s continuous addition of new unfunded regulation, operator turnover and costly certification requirements, as well as tough decisions regarding water distribution, water storage and sewage treatment. S...
I’m back! I know, “What could she possibly have to tell us now?” I would like to talk to you all about the “shocking truth” of Fibromyalgia. This is a condition that I was diagnosed with several years ago and, as my life has changed, my body has changed and my emotional state has changed, so has my condition. A few years ago I was working at a popular retail store and I noticed that as things got worse and worse at work, so did my health. I would wake up in the morning feeling like I had the worst flu on the planet. Y...
To the Editor: I write this as a form of therapy for me! It helps in finalizing the passing of our dog (son) Tristen. As I walk through the house, picking up Tristen’s toys after having to put him down for an aggressive decline from a brain tumor over the last two weeks, thoughts of all the cute things he did come flooding back to us! Like how he would come and wrinkle his nose and give both of us a kiss goodnight after we climbed into bed! He was one very smart dog! We had to spell certain words because he knew exactly w...
To the Editor: This what I have learned from reading the Mueller Report: 1) Mueller’s job was limited to investigating any links between Russia and the Trump campaign along with any other matters that came up during the investigation. He was not authorized to bring charges, if any, against the president. 2) Russia did interfere in the 2016 election. 3) The Trump campaign expected it would win the electoral vote with Russian help. 4) Trump tried to sabotage the investigation, but his staff stopped him. 5) Media reports for two...
To the Editor: Last week, 21 retirees from Olympia spent three days in Odessa. We hiked through the coulees, looked at birds, studied geology, learned about local history, golfed and enjoyed local refreshments. Lake Creek Coulee has some beautiful trails. We saw lots of birds, panoramic vistas and enough rattlesnakes to keep us on our toes. We loved your town and couldn’t have been treated better! Any Occasion (Banquet Hall) was the perfect venue for our nightly gatherings. Paul (Scheller) graciously opened the historical mus...
In 1869, the main Western Expansion started. The railroads began expanding to more towns and cities. They brought the people who cleared the land, established schools, built roads and made the west what it is today. Many of these people had come through Ellis Island which was the gateway for most immigrants. Have people forgotten about our own countrymen who settled the unknown, lived through the Great Depression and two world wars? They think the hoards of people coming to the U.S. are coming to fill jobs? Do they know many...
To the Editor: Carbon dioxide is the thermostat of earth’s atmosphere. That was demonstrated by John Tyndall, a British physicist, in experiments done in his laboratory in the 1850s. Using a relatively simple apparatus he showed infrared radiation (heat) passes through oxygen and nitrogen gases unimpeded, whereas carbon dioxide, even in low concentrations, absorbs heat. Light energy from the sun [a spectrum of wavelengths] passes to the earth’s surface with little absorption, bringing the energy that is transformed into hea...
To the Editor: Just a warning, Spring is here, and yard cleanup after winter is underway. Those with pets should be aware. Ours are like our children, and I try to protect them as such. Most of the products we spray to kill the unwanted weeds and grasses are toxic to our pets! Most all dogs and cats eat weeds and grasses for one reason or another. I have seen dogs and cats that have eaten grass after being spayed. Some of the affects cause loss of appetite, vomiting of blood, etc., very similar to rat poisons in how they...
To the Editor: Spring Fling! I’m not sure how long ago Spring Fling started, but it is here and going strong. Spring Fling a time to clean up the yard and the house, and get ready for a productive and happy time of year. But it is also about and full of quilts. Spring Fling, I think, got started around the time the quilt show started. I think this because a few years back I tried to start a car show to supplement it and bring business to my downtown pizza shop in the old Historic Rolling Thunder building, once home of the P...
To the Editor. Concerning the fireworks of Friday, March 29, 2019 and Saturday, March 30, 2019. Friday night was bad for noise. Saturday sounded like a war zone. Two large blasts around 8 p.m. shook our house and rattled our windows, and we live across town from the race site, on the outskirts. No consideration was given to people who have PTSD or animals that may be affected by the noise. I didn’t know any fireworks were going to happen, I only found out after calling law enforcement [and learning] that a permit was g...
After Lincoln County Commissioners Rob Coffman, Scott Hutsell and Mark Stedman recently passed a resolution to hold open meetings for negotiations with the county’s public employees union, there has been considerable debate about the issue. Now Spokane County Commissioners have adopted a similar resolution, and the arguments are heating up. Below are two recently published, opposing views on the subject. By ERIN SHANNON Washington Policy Center Last December, Spokane County commissioners lifted the veil of secrecy that s...
• More than 3,000 12- to 14-year-olds were charged with crimes in Washington state over the last six years • Bill would presume this age group incapable of committing crime in an effort to keep more juveniles out of detention • Prosecutors worry this would create too many additional procedures and clog courts Over the last six years, more than 3,000 children between 12 and 14 years old were charged with crimes in Washington’s juvenile courts. Senate Bill 5735 aims to reduce that number by raising the age that a child is pres...
• Bill would allow homeless people to survive in public without fear of obstruction • Law prohibits discrimination based on housing status A group of 11 Democratic lawmakers aims to address the rights of homeless people and their ability to survive in public. Rep. Mia Gregerson, D-Seatac, is the primary sponsor of House Bill 1591. The representative said she seeks to create a more-permanent solution to the homeless crisis instead of quick-fix laws. HB 1591 would allow homeless people to survive in a vehicle or public spa...
To the Editor: Initiative 1639, a broad set of firearms restrictions, was approved by the voters last year. Effective as of January 1 of this year, the age for firearms purchases was raised to 21. Rest of the law takes effect July 1. It makes no sense, then, for some sheriffs to say there is nothing for them to enforce and then tell their deputies not to enforce the law. Sheriffs do not determine constitutionality of any law; the courts do. That being said, it comes as no real surprise that some sheriffs say they will not...
All right, lets talk about “Baby Mama/Daddy Drama.” Can somebody please tell me why I am constantly hearing about the parent with custody of the child withholding visitation from the other parent for stupid reasons. This is not legal and it is morally WRONG. I get it, you have custody, you hold all of the cards, but seriously, who are you hurting, YOUR CHILDREN. I have been through it with people I love and let me tell you, I throw the law in the mom’s face whenever she tries to make up an excuse to not let the child see t...
By DYANNE DEERING Can we talk for a minute about all of the new and exciting things that are going on in my life? I know what you’re going to say, “Dyanne, your life is already sooooo exciting.” Well, recently it got even more exciting. In October, I was diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic. I know you are probably thinking, “but haven’t you always been, since you are so voluptuous?” This is a new diagnosis and it SUCKS!! I have teetered on the border for many years and finally this year God said, “you know what Dyanne, I nee...
Homelessness, like poverty, is not a choice. Society creates the circumstances for both to exist, sometimes side by side. In other words, the misery experienced by the homeless and the poor is cruel and needless except to those who have political power to punish them for suffering under the conditions created by those who have power. For example, the recent ordinance by the Moses Lake City Council banning all citizens from using the parks between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. is such a punishment aimed with one particular group of...
By JIM BOSS On October 28, 2017, Q began posting on the chan boards 4chan and, later on, 8chan. Followers have learned through these posts that this is a military intelligence operation promising that great change is coming worldwide. Autists (bakers) on the board are given intel (crumbs) which they research (knead) and decipher into truth (bread). Because these autists have their own language, Q had asked to make the postings more user friendly. Each autist took on a task, and several worked together to create Qmap.pub, a...
What a month this has been. It’s hard to have a good Christmas when your spouse HATES the holiday. My seven-year-old Anabela started out the month beyond excited. Every day she would ask when are we decorating the tree. But the tree was locked in a garage that only Dad could get into. So this Mom bugged him to the point that he made a tree out of lights on the wall. My seven-year-old thought it was great! This Mom likes things to be perfectly Christmas at Christmas. You know, a nice full tree with ornaments spaced and c...
My favorite time of the year is the holidays. I know everyone says that, but there is just something so special about them. Yes, we usually have to increase our belt sizes and our wallet usually shrinks, but to me it is a glorious time. I am not the type of person who counts every present I have under the tree. As a matter of fact, it is very rarely that I have a present under the tree. Kind of depressing, I know, and it can make me sad, only because others will ask, “What did you get?” When I say, “Nothing,” they gasp an...
