By DYANNE DEERING What makes this woman MAD? It’s easy. It’s when we take it upon ourselves to judge other people. I’ve touched on it before when I have talked about the misconceptions on voluptuous people, but we are always judging people. THERE IS ONLY ONE JUDGE. That judge is GOD. I see it and hear it all of the time. “She is really skinny, she must use meth” or “she’s really skinny, she must be anorexic.” It could be that she has a really high metabolism or that she has a tumor on her thyroid. Have you stopped to ask...
To the Editor: At least 75 percent of Americans believe that health care is the #1 issue in this election. Republicans in the House of Representatives have voted at least 50 times to repeal the Affordable Care Act (also called Obamacare). Republicans recently filed a lawsuit in Texas to have pre-existing conditions removed from the ACA. The Trump administration plans to implement a new policy after the midterm elections to let health insurance companies charge higher premiums for those with pre-existing conditions. Yet, many...
To the Editor: – Use it or lose it – – Probably not – – We’re in for the long haul – You may have noticed that the last two weeks the Rolling Thunder Pizza shop has been closed. If you did not notice, well, I don’t know what to say. That is part of the problem, if there is one. Perhaps there is not. You can tell me. No, the Rolling Thunder is not closing or for sale anytime soon. I sometimes wonder why, though, always replaced by, “because I love Odessa. I do.” We started investing in Odessa back in 2007 and have never stop...
To the Editor: Lisa Brown is your typical left-wing politician out trying to buy votes with our money by promising to vote against cuts in Medicare and Social Security benefits. As an economist she knows, but fails to mention, these programs are unsustainable without sizable infusions of tax dollars, benefit reductions, or both. These programs now account for nearly $2 trillion or half of the $4.1 trillion federal budget. Medicaid spending alone has skyrocketed since 2010 when ObamaCare passed, going from $273 billion to $383...
To the Editor: It looks like we have created a generation of mass murderers. The kind we read about and grew up with! Serial killers like Ted Bundy, Son of Sam, The Green River Killer etc. But now they’re so much younger! Most are 14-22 years of age. Florida’s shooter was only 19! I am sure that we will find out he was a result of bullying! Most have been or are bullied, made fun of or ridiculed for being, shall we say, different. But that’s what makes America, America! Today, they just kill them all at once! It’s faster...
To the Editor: It must be working for Rep. McMorris Rodgers to make ads approved by her that are untrue. I just received a solicitation by mail on September 14, 2018 that doubles down on the lie that her opponent wanted to allow sex offenders to live near public schools. Lisa Brown wanted more children protected from sex offenders, not less. (Lisa has a history of voting to protect women and children, unlike CMR who has voted against Equal Pay for Women and at least once against the Violence Against Women Act.) A full-page...
To the Editor: I support Sylvia Hammond for the District 13 state house in Olympia. As a farmer and teacher, she understands agriculture, water rights and the importance of quality education. Hammond listens to the concerns of those living in the 13th District. At a recent “Meet and Greet,” she made time to visit with everyone who had concerns and encouraged constituents to contact her with other ideas/concerns. She travels throughout the district to hear from those she will represent. When legislation about minimum wage was...
Dr. Universe: Asked by Izzy, age 10, from Maryland. Dear Izzy, Not only do I enjoy answering science questions from kids, but I also like naps, tuna fish sandwiches and chasing lasers. I wasn’t entirely sure why I like chasing those little red dots. I asked my friend Leticia Fanucchi, a veterinarian at Washington State University. “Cats like lasers because they are predators and like to chase or hunt anything that moves fast around them,” Fanucchi said. A zipping red light that quickly switches directions might have a simil...
To the Editor: While waiting outside the Spokane Valley City Council in July, I met an elderly woman who was very proud that she grew up in Idaho and now lived in the Spokane Valley. We had a brief discussion about immigration, and she just couldn’t understand why all the migrants were coming to the United States with their children. “Why don’t they just stay in their own countries and fix them, instead of coming here?” she queried. I responded by asking her, “Well, why do you think they come here?” and she said that they w...
To the Editor: As I read the news of Matt Manweller’s firing from Central Washington University following the investigation into reports of inappropriate conduct, I was reassured that we in the 13th Legislative District have a choice this November to elect a candidate of integrity, clarity and compassion, Sylvia Hammond. Sylvia Hammond has been farming with her husband in Grant County for 38 years, has raised their family, has worked in the public school system as an employee and more recently as a volunteer, is active in her...
To the Editor: She had turned 13 this Fathers Day. She went everywhere I went! If not on the bed with me when I was ill, she was always there on the floor next to the bed when jumping up on it was to hard to do because of her arthritis. A real trooper! She never showed the pain she had to endure daily from injuries to her back hips, which in an odd way helped me deal with the pain of a broken neck. She was always at the ready to go or do anything. But a car ride and the ball were her favorites! They made her so happy. She...
To the Editor: This is the truth about “Tax Cuts and Jobs Act” of 2017. I am a tax CPA in Spokane, Washington. This is my 52nd year in public accounting. I have read the new laws many times, and our CPA firm has written and issued a 138-page book/seminar on the Act. We have spent more than 400 hours reading and studying the new laws. I am an Independent voter, a Certified Public Accountant with clients of every persuasion, creed and political affiliation. When I deal with taxes, my interest is truth, not politics. The tax...
To the Editor: Cathy McMorris Rodgers has been a strong advocate for people with disabilities. She is one of the leaders in Congress, and the whole federal government, on bringing awareness to Down Syndrome. She brought to Congress’ attention the fact that less than one-hundredth of one percent is devoted to Down Syndrome research, and the fact that nearly every person with Down Syndrome develops Alzheimer’s or dementia. Cathy called on Congress to put more into researching Down Syndrome, so that people with that extra 21st c...
To the Editor: Recently I sent a letter to Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers. Part of the letter says: “I just needed to tell you how encouraged I was when I met some young people from your campaign at the anti-racism rally at the county courthouse on August 2, and while we were talking they told me that racism has no place in American politics and is in fact un-American.” On August 4, I bumped into Cathy at the Hillyard Parade and she told me that our land should be the land of opportunity for everyone. I was encouraged...
To the Editor: It’s a sad day here in Odessa when a business owner/ landlord can come and rip the doors off the house you’re renting, leave it wide open for two days, so anyone could help themselves to whatever they wanted and did. All with no remorse, just pure vengeance in mind. Then say you’re not a good Christian, because you’re mad at them. You need to pray! And trying to haul their belongings to the dump because the renter is not moving fast enough for them. Blatantly harassing the renters the whole time! Yelling...
To the Editor: I support Sylvia Hammond’s campaign for the District 13 seat in the State House in Olympia. She has been involved in farming and teaching her whole life—both honorable professions. She understands the multitude of difficulties involved with agriculture and water rights, and the critical importance of quality education. Her firsthand experience is invaluable in dealing with these complex problems. I have to question the incumbent Matt Manweller’s qualifications to work in the State House. He tweeted “Way to go T...
The plight of a grieving orca who continues to carry her dead calf for weeks is reported by the Seattle Times. The Spokane Spokesman-Review lets people know for the first time the Legislature is forming a task force to exempt lawmakers from portions of the Public Records Act. The Columbia Basin Herald in Moses Lake warns that air quality for the county fair may be unhealthy because of wildfire smoke pollution. The Omak County Chronicle reports that Wally Richards is this year’s Omak Stampede grand marshal. The Nisqually V...
To the Editor: It’s time for a change in the thirteenth district. Let’s choose Sylvia Hammond to represent us in Olympia. Sylvia has lived in the district for 40 years as a farmer and a teacher. She’s stepping up to run for office now, because she believes politics has become too divisive, crude and disrespectful. Sylvia has the values that many of us in central Washington share, of honesty, integrity and common sense. Matt Manweller’s staff hangs up the phone when we call him, if we express views that disagree with his. Di...
To the Editor: I read with interest Ms. Cooks (Davenport Times 7/19) indictment of Matt Manweller, our current 13th District Legislative Representative. Apparently being under investigation is good enough to disparage him. To be more accurate, the investigation is over, but the outcome has not been released. And to suggest he hasn’t been effective on the job for the people of this District, for years, is inaccurate and silly. Matt is a family man, professor of political science and teaches constitutional law. He’s been a GOP...
To the Editor: I am puzzled that some Americans are willing to throw away their freedoms for a dictatorship. I, however, believe in America. In Democracy – American democracy to be exact. I believe in the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution and all its Amendments, the Rule of Law. I believe in the Golden Rule, Kindness, Hope, Faith, Charity, Tolerance, Diversity, Goodness, Civility, Compassion, Love, Acceptance, Truth, God. I believe in Family and Friends, Colleagues and Acquaintances, Strangers and P...
To the Editor: The current U.S. government recently placed tariffs on some Chinese imports into this country. China is the largest market for our agricultural raw materials, with a tax upon entry. The Chinese have retaliated by placing an additional 25-percent tariff on selected imports from the U.S. Just recently, the Trump administration announced the prospect of government subsidies to be paid for farmers injured by Chinese tariffs. Congress has a jaundiced eye toward more unnecessary deficit spending, so these promises ar...
To the Editor: If you live in the 13th Legislative District—like I do—it’s time for a change. I’m going to vote for Sylvia Hammond to be our representative in the State House in Olympia. She will be a thoughtful legislator and a hard worker. A retired farmer and teacher from Ephrata, she has knowledge and experience of issues that directly affect our district. The incumbent, Matt Manweller, is currently being investigated because of allegations of inappropriate conduct at Central Washington University. According to the Dai...
Fox News: A 32-year-old cold case murder has been solved after the suspect turned himself in because he wants to "right the wrong that he has done." Glenn Adams, 58, was charged with first-degree murder and robbery Friday after he walked into the Cowlitz County Hall of Justice in Kelso, Washington and confessed to the 1986 killing of Russell Haines. Haines was found strangled in his room at the Oregon Way Hotel after what officials suspected was an ambush and robbery. Adams was living at the hotel, a men's only hotel often us...
To the Editor: I believe this information is important, as my name was included in a pamphlet that was included with The Odessa Record. I was listed as a member of the Odessa Athletics Hall of Fame and that is not correct. An idea about a Hall of Fame came from me, but I was not able to go to meetings, so I was dropped as a voting member. I voted for the first ballot by telephone but that was my last vote. The Hall of Fame has taken a turn away from being for individual athletes as was my original intent. I regret I waited...
About 20,000 students recently graduated from U.S. medical schools. Now, they’re beginning the next chapter of their training, as residents. Yet, fewer than 7,000 will be pursuing careers in primary care. America will be short up to 43,100 primary care physicians by 2030, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges. Medical schools have a responsibility to help fix this shortfall. They can do so by making primary care more alluring to students. Primary care physicians are our healthcare system’s first line of...
