Odessa Record subscriber Larry Fisher of Spokane continues his series of articles on the history of the Batum/Lauer area (where his wife, the former Joyce Kiesz, grew up.)

Schafer, George, (b. 1/17/1874, Frank, Russia. d. 4/23/1956). Father: Conrad Schafer. Mother: Barbara Greenwalt. George came to the United States at the age of 14 in 1892, locating with his parents in Nebraska. As a young man working with the railway, he came to Washington, and farmed south of Lamona for almost five years. He was married in 1903 to Miss Katherine Schmidt. They lived for a time in Puyallup and Seattle, then returned here, farming the home place southwest of Odessa. He will retire in 1937.

Scheller, George, (b. 9/2/1898, Russia. d. 3/12/1996). George came to the United States with his parents as a small child. He farmed for many years between Odessa and Ritzville. He will be preceded in death by his wife, Rose, in August 1982.

Scheller, Henry H., (b. 4/6/1884, Niebaner, Russia. d. 8/23/1972). Henry, son of Henry and Anna Scheller. As a child he came to Old Mexico in 1898, and then a year later to Enid, OK. In 1904 the family moved to the Warden, Washington area, and a few years later to the Odessa area, where he will farm until 1949, when he will retire and live in Odessa. On 4/20/1908 Henry was united in marriage with Mary Walter.

Schimke, Mrs. Helena Leischner, (b. 8/18/1873, Kulm, South Russia. d. 3/23/1949). Father: John Leischner born Russia. Mother: Justina Hass born Russia. Helena came to the United States with her parents while a small child; the family located at Parkston, South Dakota, where she married John D. Schimke. John and Helena came to the Odessa area in 1891.

Schmidt, John, (b. 1864. d. 1956). John was a native of Russia, married there in 1885 to Marie Benner. In 1892 they moved to Hastings, NE., and 3 years later to Walla Walla. In 1902 they established a wheat ranch in the L-B-D. Starting 1936, they will relocate to Puyallup. While in Russia he served as an army doctor with the military forces.
