Odessa Record subscriber Larry Fisher of Spokane continues his series of articles on the history of the Batum/Lauer area (where his wife, the former Joyce Kiesz, grew up).

Schmidt, Jacob J., (b. 8/17/1877, Neu Messer, Russia. d. 4/20/1950). Son of John Peter Schmidt and Maria Christina Oestreich Schmidt. He married Elizabeth Green on 1/13/1913, likely at the Schmidt homestead near Batum, Adams Co., Washington.

Schnell, John, (b. 12/20/1860, Russia. d. 7/29/1936). Father: Conrad Schnell, born Russia. Wife: Katherine. John came to the United States as a young man.

Smith, Frank, (b. 2/6/1886, Russia. d. 11/6/1939). Father: John Peter Smith, born Russia. Mother: Christina Ostrich, born Russia. Frank, a native of Russia, came to the United States with his family as a boy, living for a time at Ritzville and Walla Walla, after which the family took up its residence in the L-B-D. Marrying, Mr. Smith operated a ranch until seven years ago, when he moved to Odessa.

Speck, John, (b. 1886, Russia. d.1959). Father: Jacob Speck. Mother: Fredricka Schafer.

Speck, Frances Mae Voise, (b.3/3/1929, Havre, Montana. d. 2/19/1983). Parents: William and Irene Voise. Frances moved to Odessa with her family at a very early age. She will graduate from Odessa H.S. in 1948. On 8/29/1949 Frances will marry John Speck Jr. at Odessa. The couple will move to Batum where they will farm until moving to Moses Lake in 1967. In 1969 they will move to Klamath Falls, Oregon. Following a divorce in 1972, she will move back to Moses Lake.

Speck, Mrs. Mary Lobe, (b. 1/10/ 1891, Kulm, Russia. d. 5/25/1982). Mother: Wilhelmina Gross; Father: Gottlieb Lobe. Spouse: John Speck. Mary came to the United States with her parents at the age of three years. The family lived in the Ritzville area for a short time and then she spent most of the rest of her life in the Odessa area. In 1908 she married John Speck at Warden, Washington. They will farm in the Batum area.
