Odessa's library expands collection, thanks to grant

The Odessa Public Library is among the libraries in Adams and Lincoln counties that will soon have extra materials on their shelves thanks to a grant administered by the Washington State Library.

The Connecting Libraries through Resource Sharing grant program has provided a $5,000 grant for seven public libraries. The Ritzville Public Library is the lead library receiving the grant, and Odessa, Davenport Public Library, Harrington Public Library, Hesseltine Public Library, Reardan Memorial Library and Sprague Public Library are the partnering libraries.

The $5,000 grant will be awarded equally among the seven libraries, with a maximum award of $715 per library, including $500 for collection development, up to $140 for travel to attend required meetings, and up to $75 for processing materials.

“This grant will increase our library budget tremendously, which will enable us to buy more new materials,” said Odessa Public Librarian Julie Jantz. “This is great news for our patrons. Now they’ll have more books and other items to read or check out.”

Carolyn Petersen, the State Library’s assistant program manager for library development, said the purpose of the grant is to encourage cooperation among public libraries in counties where inter-local agreements to share materials haven’t existed by providing grant funds for collection development.

“We at the State Library are very pleased to give the grants to help them.” The funds are awarded to public libraries within counties or areas that do not currently provide countywide library service and do not have formal inter-local agreements in place.

Funds for the CLRS grant program come from the federal government through the Libraries Services and Technology Act.
