Odessa Record subscriber Larry Fisher of Spokane continues his series of articles on the history of the Batum/Lauer area (where his wife, the former Joyce Kiesz, grew up).

Walter Jr., Jacob, (b. 1896, Walla Walla, Washington. d. 11/14/1993). When he was 3, his family journeyed by wagon via Lyons Ferry on the Snake River to the Odessa area, where they homesteaded near the present town of Odessa. Mr. Walter graduated from Odessa H.S. in 1916. He also attended Washington State College. He married Rachel Macdonald of Spokane in 1918. Mr. Walter was a prominent wheat farmer, cattle rancher, purebred beef breeder and community leader in the Odessa area. His ranch, Lakeview Ranch, will become a world-renowned shorthorn beef ranch. He will hold several positions with the American Shorthorn Assn. and will also be a member of the Inland Empire Shorthorn Assn., the Washington Cattlemen’s Assn. and the Lincoln County Cattlemen’s Assn. He will be one of the organizers of the Tri-County Livestock Fair, established in 1947; it will last for 20 years. Jacob will be director of the Odessa Trading Co., a firm his father co-founded in 1927. He will also be a director of the Odessa School Board during the 1940s. He will retire at age 76 but remain active. His last public appearance will be on Sept. 22, when he and his wife will be grand marshals of the 23rd annual Deutschesfest Parade.
Witt Gottlieb Gustave, (b. 9/3/1870, Arzis, South Russia. d.6/5/1920). Father: William Witt, born Russia; Mother: Christina Wenzlaf, born Russia. He resided in South Russia until manhood, when in Oct. 1893, he married Miss Pauline Kettler and soon after they emigrated to Unites States settling first in South Dakota, where they resided for five years and then came to the homestead in the L-B-D where they resided until his death.
Yuckert, Carl, (b. 11/6/1906. d.9/26/1980). Never married.
Yuckert, Peter, (b. 8/9/1880, North Russia. d. 1/23/1932). Father: Phillip Yuckert, born Russia; Mother: Margaret Schafer, born Russia.
