Reading by flashlight is fun

A very successful Flashlight Reading Night was held Monday night in the school’s multipurpose room. With their blankets, flashlights and books in hand, 80 children and adults attended the event. Retired elementary teacher Bev Scherr organized the event, assisted by the Odessa High School chapter of the The National Honor Society, which had adopted the event as a community service project for the year.

The purpose of such events is to promote family reading time. Previous Flashlight Reading Nights have been sponsored at times by grants or by the Odessa Public Library in partnership with the elementary school teachers. For the first time, this year’s event was a Title 1 Family Literacy activity which provided funding for snacks, free books and other prizes.
