Serving Lincoln County for more than a century!
The year has kicked off and been a productive one for the FFA chapter members and agriculture students; both groups have been working diligently. Between practicing for upcoming CDEs (Career Development Events), signing up and working shifts at activities, and doing their fair share of homework, this time of year requires a good deal of effort and cooperation from everyone.
During Deutschesfest the chapter was in charge of running the corn booth and assisted the FFA alumni in the reuben booth; the chapter members enjoyed visiting with their customers. The corn booth was a success, raising more money than last year, which can be applied towards upcoming events.
Currently, FFA members are selling Cyrus O’Leary pies, cheesecakes and muffins to raise money for the general FFA account and their own personal accounts. The members use the money to pay for FFA-related expenses such as state and national conventions and uniforms, so they do not have to pay out-of-pocket. If you are in need of a pie or cheesecake, you can call the ag shop or visit with any FFA member from Odessa or Harrington; the items will be delivered on November 21 and 22.
The Odessa and Harrington FFA Chapters took part in the District Soils CDE October 13 in George. The teams consisted of Rebekah Marshall and Amanda Hardt from Odessa and Jake Tanke, Ricky Hedreen, Madison Charlton, Ellie Hedreen, and Cydnee Keiffer representing Harrington. It was a beautiful day to judge the soil pits along an orchard and field of kale. The group placed second and had two high individuals – Jake Tanke, first place, and Ricky Hedreen third place overall.
On Saturday, October 1, the trap-shooting team participated in their home shoot and took fifth place out of 16 squads. Team members were Nick Tebow, Nick Nelson, Ryan Greenwalt, Hunter Bramer, Max Greenwalt, Garret Braun, Justin Hunt and Nik Evans. Odessa Gun Club members Cindy Groh, Tom Schuh, Doug Tebow, Landon Lobe and Danny Williams provided help prior to and during the shoot. The next shoot is November 5 in Lind, and the group is hoping the weather holds out.
Whitmore’s three afternoon classes in Odessa have been working hard on their agriculture skills from welding (arc and MIG skills), working in the greenhouse caring for 110 poinsettias, horticulture/plant science (dissecting and identifying flowers, leaves and stems), preparing for leadership activities, and enhancing their overall agriculture knowledge of our state and county.
The Horticulture/Poinsettia Committee will be providing the community with beautiful poinsettias for the holidays. They will be selling them December 5-9 and will have a table set up at Christmas Fest on December 7. Pre-orders for poinsettias for the holidays can be submitted by calling the ag shop at 982-2711.
Halloween Carnival
The Halloween Carnival will take place October 30 from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Odessa Community Center. It will be a wonderful and SPOOK-TACULAR event! So pick out your favorite costume, bake a cake/goodie or just come out to enjoy an evening of food, fun and laughs! The Halloween Carnival is for children and adults alike; you can play games, win prizes, and enjoy a delicious hamburger.
Kimberly Nelson is the FFA student reporter and Erica Whitmore is the agriculture teacher and FFA advisor.
