Titan football team heads into quarterfinals Saturday

The 6-3 Odessa-Harrington titans earned home field advantage last week, and played the pass-oriented 9-1 Colton Wildcats this past Friday night. On the first defensive play for the Titans, Jake Tanke (22) broke his fibula and is out for 6 - 8 weeks. The final score was 48-30, a convincing win which advanced us to the state quarter-finals!

Much like last week, holding onto the ball was a problem for both teams. Nineteen fumbles graced the stat sheet, nearly as many as last week. Jared King (7), our dual-threat quarterback, accounted for 14 of them. Virtually all of them were center-to-quarterback exchanges.

Even with all of those fumbles, positive yardage and even touchdowns came on these same plays. During one of those plays, King plucked the ball off the ground and tossed a 43-yard touchdown to Brett Larmer (12) in the fourth quarter. Markus Smith (8) made the key block for King to find his receiver. On the other fumble plays, multiple yards and first downs were achieved.

The Titans were up 12 - 0 at the end of the first quarter of play and pretty much took control from there, leading 18 - 0 at one point en route to their decisive 48 to 30 playoff win.

King, who earns my game ball (his fourth of the season), showed poise, leadership and determination. He completed 8 of his 9 pass attempts for 167 yards (18.5 yards per carry), two touchdowns and one interception. That means he never had a pass hit the ground during the entire game. But as it has been in the past, King was more adept at the running game.

King ran for 196 yards on 23 carries for an 8.5-yard average and five touchdowns. Other heroes include Cade Weber (3), who intercepted a pass on the first play of the second quarter; Larmer, who carried the rock 25 times for 96 yards (3.8 yards per carry), controlled the clock and gained the tough yards to move the chains.

With this win, the Titans advance to the state quarterfinals and will play this coming Saturday, November 19. The Titans improved their record to 7 - 3 and look to advance further in the playoffs.
