Workshop urges planting of canola

The Oilseed Crop Production Workshop held in the Odessa Community Center Tuesday, January 24, was a day-long effort to educate and encourage area farmers to add canola to their crop rotation with wheat.

About 65 people from throughout the Inland Empire attended the event, which began at 7:30 a.m. with registration, refreshments and time to visit with vendors who had set up informational booths. Inland Empire Oilseeds also provided guided tours of its Odessa plant during this time.

Vendors provided informational posters, as well as printouts the visitors could take home. Pens, notepads, hats and other free items were also provided.

Each attendee was also given the use of a small handheld device that was used to record the answers to survey questions projected onto a screen via computer during one of the presentations.

Some visitors chose to leave the workshop early to be able to drive home in daylight, but a solid core of interested parties stayed until the final social hour at around 5 p.m.

Editor’s note: Next week we will provide more information on the presenters, their presentations and the outlook for canola and other oilseed crops in the Odessa area.
