My Wonderful Teacher

My third grade teacher, a gem so precious and rare

She was regal, elegant, a jewel beyond compare

Her name’s Mrs. Mangis, what a lovely lady she was

And I loved her to pieces, well --- just because

So beautiful, so graceful, so tall, and so thin

There’s so much to say, I don’t know where to begin

Her voice was so soothing, so soft to my ear

like stringed violins, a pure symphony to hear

The smile on her face, could make my sad eyes shine

For life wasn’t so easy, for this boy about to turn nine

Compassionate and gentle, how lovely she dressed

She was my favorite teacher, and Wilson Creek’s best

She taught me to write, and she taught me to spell

She taught the times tables, that I learned very well

Language, arithmetic, all those columns to add

And reading and health, to learn, when I was a lad

I learned to multiply, and how to check my subtraction

She taught me how to divide, how to write out each fraction

She praised my penmanship, when I’d write without flaw

I sure did like art, what fun to color and draw

I couldn’t wait for recess, she’d let us play in the gym

And her only son Gary, well, I sure did envy him

And “The Secret Garden,” she read that story out loud

She was the sun in my sky, she erased every dark cloud

The Christmas card that I made, I still have it yet

And never once did I see, dear Mrs. Mangis upset

Then came that sad day, I didn’t want her to leave

And when she went away, I sorely did grieve

Sweeter than honeycomb, she could put sugar to shame

She deserves a solid gold star, in The Teachers’ Hall of Fame

After all of these years, tribute is long overdue

Than you, Mrs. Mangis, I --- I will always love you
