My Wonderful TeacherMy third grade teacher, a gem so precious and rareShe was regal, elegant, a jewel beyond compareHer name’s Mrs. Mangis, what a lovely lady she wasAnd I loved her to pieces, well --- just becauseSo beautiful, so graceful, so tall, and so thinThere’s so much to say, I don’t know where to beginHer voice was so soothing, so soft to my earlike stringed violins, a pure symphony to hearThe smile on her face, could make my sad eyes shineFor life wasn’t so easy, for this boy about to turn nineCompassionate and gentle, how lovely she dressedShe was my favorite teacher, and Wilson Creek’s bestShe taught me to write, and she taught me to spellShe taught the times tables, that I learned very wellLanguage, arithmetic, all those columns to addAnd reading and health, to learn, when I was a ladI learned to multiply, and how to check my subtractionShe taught me how to divide, how to write out each fractionShe praised my penmanship, when I’d write without flawI sure did like art, what fun to color and drawI couldn’t wait for recess, she’d let us play in the gymAnd her only son Gary, well, I sure did envy himAnd “The Secret Garden,” she read that story out loudShe was the sun in my sky, she erased every dark cloudThe Christmas card that I made, I still have it yetAnd never once did I see, dear Mrs. Mangis upsetThen came that sad day, I didn’t want her to leaveAnd when she went away, I sorely did grieveSweeter than honeycomb, she could put sugar to shameShe deserves a solid gold star, in The Teachers’ Hall of FameAfter all of these years, tribute is long overdueThan you, Mrs. Mangis, I --- I will always love youArley M.
