Serving Lincoln County for more than a century!
Daniel Hopp, long-time Colville resident, died February 2, 2012 in Colville at the age of 91. He was born in Odessa, the son of Conrad and Anna Margaret (Bostrom) Hopp.
Dan moved with his family to Lamona in 1925, where he attended school through the sixth grade and worked on the family farm. He then attended seventh and eighth grade in Odessa. Due to the needs of the farm, he was unable to continue his formal education.
On February 17, 1946, Dan married Mary Lou Long in Davenport. They began their life together on the family ranch at Lamona. In the fall of 1952, Dan, Mary Lou and their two sons, moved to Colville, where they began farming in the Colville valley. After 30 years of operating the farm, Dan retired and became his son’s farm hand. He helped on the farm for the next 30 years before taking final pause from working the soil.
Dan was community centered and found great satisfaction working with civic and agricultural organizations. He helped to construct the Kettle Falls grain elevator and served on the board of directors for many years. Dan also served 26 years as a committeeman for the Stevens County A.S.C.S. and several years on the soil conservation board. He was active with the Colville Lions clubs and fondly remembers “planting many roto-tiller blades” while volunteering with the construction of the south side of the Colville City Park. Dan took great pride in his participation in and formation of the rural fire district and later combination with the City Fire Department. He retired from the Colville Fire Department in 1984 after 20 years of service. Dan was an active member of the First Congregational Church and the scrooby club. He assisted with many church social functions and spent countless hours on their building and remodeling projects. Dan enjoyed wood working and reading.
Dane was also a member of the Knights of Pythias and Washington Association of Wheat Growers.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, two brothers and a daughter.
Dan is survived by his wife Mary Lou Hopp at the home; sons Elden Hopp and wife Luella, Loon Lake and Marvin Hopp, Colville; six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren; sister Helen Wolf, Deer Park, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The memorial service will begin at 1 p.m., Thursday, February 9, 2012 at the First Congregational Church in Colville, followed by an 11 a.m., Friday, February 10, 2012 graveside service at the Odessa Cemetery in Odessa. Memorial contributions may be given to the First Congregational Church. Danekas Funeral Chapel and Crematory is entrusted with the arrangements.
