Poster contest winners

For the fifth annual Washington State Ag Safety Poster Contest held February 22 in Wenatchee at the Convention Center, 8th graders from both schools were put into teams. The groups selected an agriculture safety issue, then designed and created a safety poster addressing the following: 1) Identify the safety problem, 2) How does the problem affect safety? 3) What causes the safety issue? and 4) State a remedy for the safety issue.

On the topic of ATV Safety, Harrington’s Team 1 consisted of William Mann, Isabelle Phillips, Elaine Van Belle and Lanessa Simon and Odessa’s Team 2 consisted of Max Greenwalt, Hunter Bramer, Parker Valverde, Johnathon Brightwell and Jez Worrell. Harrington’s poster took second place.

On the subject of tractor rollover safety, Harrington’s Team 2 was made up of Brandon Bragg, Derek Montgomery, Jacob Montgomery and Delani Smith and Odessa’s Team 3 consisting of Caleb O'Neil, Anna Marie Bockman, Dylan Barglof and Casey Schlomer. Harrington’s Team 2 placed third.

On animal safety, Harrington’s Team 3 was Joey Buell, Dylan Shockley and Caitlin Kennedy and Odessa’s Team 4 was Makayla Baird, Briette Boss, Caleb Singer and Laura Kinney .

Odessa’s Team 1, Alexis Burdick, Katie DeWulf, Lillie Camp and Stacia Lesser, made a poster on the topic of eye safety and took first place.

The winning posters will be displayed at the capitol in Olympia and travel with the Governor this year while she attends other safety conferences within the state. The students were greeted at the door, given a nice luncheon in their honor and presented with checks for their accomplishments.

The event is sponsored by the Washington State Farm Bureau and Governor’s Safety & Health Advisory Board. The posters were displayed for Agriculture Safety Day on February 22 at the Wenatchee Convention Center and will continue to be displayed throughout the year at the governor’s safety functions.

More information on FFA activities and upcoming events will be provided in next week's issue of The Record. Erica Whitmore provided the pictures used here.
