Serving Lincoln County for more than a century!
Last Wednesday, March 14, a new electronic reader board was installed at the corner of Division Street and First Avenue. The sign was the brainchild of the Parent-Teacher Organization at the Odessa schools, which raised money for the project and organized its completion. Donations from businesses, individuals and other nonprofit organizations were also added to the funds generated by the PTO’s various fund-raising efforts.
Mike Kuest took down the two metal artwork tigers that had topped the sign for the past several years. The tigers had been made for the sign by Mike and Linda Kuest’s company Silhouettes by Request. Mike also donated his time to repaint the pole to get it ready for its new look.
Leo Lish provided electrical work to make the sign functional. Steve, Drew and Leslie Fink, plus Dalles Deife and Kodey Lobe all helped to remove the old reader board, leaving only the pole that was to be reused for the electronic sign.
High school secretary Chris Luiten is the person in charge of putting content on the new reader board from her school office computer. Three different lines of text in various colors are available for announcing school and community events.
Updating with new text, after a week of displaying the initial input by the installing company, also went smoothly. Luiten called The Record’s office to confirm that the sign said what it was supposed to say. It did.
The old manual sign, requiring either a ladder or a long pole to make any changes to it, is now a thing of the past. The new sign will also give visitors information on the activities going on in town, should they decide to stop and visit for a time. Being centrally located, attractive and very modern, it would appear to be a welcome addition to Odessa’s downtown.
