Odessa Knowledge Bowl team places second at state

The Odessa High School Knowledge Bowl Team, consisting of the five students pictured above along with their advisor Ellen Holman, took second place in the state 1B academic contest held March 17 at Spokane Falls Community College, right behind Bi-County rival Wilbur which took first place. West Sound Academy placed third, Clallam Bay was fourth, Almira/Coulee-Hartline fifth and Valley Christian sixth.

The 12 schools competing in the 1B classification were Almira/Coulee-Hartline, Clallam Bay, Garfield-Palouse, Harrington, Morton, Naselle, Odessa, Pe Ell, Pomeroy, Valley Christian, West Sound Academy and Wilbur.

On its way to the second-place trophy, the Knowledge Bowl team got off to a good start by taking the early lead in the written portion of the competition, leading Wilbur at that juncture by one point. After the regional competition was completed, Odessa had fallen to third behind Wilbur and West Sound Academy. Only the top six teams continued into the final round. The other six were eliminated.

In the final round, Odessa came back up to second place, beating out West Sound for the spot.
