Ladies Auxiliary supports programs both near and far

The Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars is having a bake sale on Saturday, April 28 in front of New Image Beauty Salon. The money from this sale is used to support programs for the coming year.

The Auxiliary sponsors a number of programs on an annual basis. They are:

1) Americanism – This program is intended to promote patriotism.

2) Veterans and Family Support – This program includes anything we do for our veterans, military personnel and their families. It also includes supporting the National Home and the Buddy Poppy program.

3) Cancer Aid and Research – The State of Washington and the National organization are major supporters of cancer research. The National program also includes a cancer grant program for our members.

4) Community Activities – All of the volunteer work members do, which allows the organization to maintain its non-profit status.

5) Hospital – Work done at local hospitals as well as regional veterans hospitals and residences. Odessa Auxiliary members play bingo once a month at the long term care facility. They also go to the Spokane Veterans Home once a month and do whatever is requested.

6) Legislative – Auxiliary members are always reminded to keep in contact with legislators regarding veterans’ rights.

7) Voice of Democracy/Patriots Pen – This is an essay and audio tape program for high school and middle school students, including those who attend public and private schools or are home schooled.

8) Youth Activities – Includes an elementary school essay program as well as a Patriotic Art contest for high school students. It also includes Girl and Boy Scouts and a Junior Girls program, which is similar to scouting, only for future Ladies Auxiliary members.

In addition to these core programs, the Ladies Auxiliary also participate in Gold Star Families, which supports families who have lost a spouse or child in the armed services. The group also hopes to have a float representing the Fallen Soldier Banner program in the 2012 Deutsches Fest parade.

The Ladies Auxiliary is always happy to have new members. For more information, call Leora Nixon at 982-2847.
