Letter to the Editor: Try eating for $1.25/meal. Can you do it? For how long?

Well, Congress is talking about reducing the food stamp program for the poor from around $1.48 a meal per person to somewhere between 98 cents to $1.23 a meal per person.

So, here’s a two-step challenge for your readers:

First step: Eat three well-balanced meals a day, each meal for $1.48. Try this for a day, for three days, for a week, for as long as you can manage.

Second step: Eat three well-balanced meals a day, each meal for $1.23. Try this for a day, for three days, for a week, for as long as you can manage. Of course, if you really want to be bold and daring, try eating for 98 cents a meal.

Finally, what conclusions do you draw from this reduced-cost eating experiment?

Representative Cathy McMorris-Rodgers, are you reading this letter? If so, try this food experiment yourself. I know that Washington, D. C., is expensive, so I will cut you some slack – try eating on $1.50 a meal for step one and $1.25 a meal for step two. If you really want to be bold and daring, try eating for $1.00 a meal. Report back to us how it works for you and your family before you vote on this issue. Thanks.
