Countdown to Fest begins

The Odessa Chamber of Commerce heard updatess on several projects at its July 24 meeting, but at the top of the list was Deutschesfest, which is a mere 7 weeks away as The Record goes to press.

It was reported that the FFA chapter has declined to be in charge of the Youth Garten, so options for other possible operators were discussed.

Publicity chairwoman Korianne Scheller reported that she has still been unable to contact anyone from the carnival that set up in the Odessa Foods parking lot last year. She said she has left several messages, none of which has been returned. Several other options for family entertainment were discussed, including face painting, a magician, a circus and a musical.

Scheller also reminded business owners that if they wish to participate in a special discounted advertising program with Venue Magazine, a publication with extensive free distribution, they should let her know within the next week or so.

Biergarten chairwoman Jennifer Martin said that she would like to get started on sanding and painting tables and benches as soon as possible.

Lindsy Starkel reported that a building contractor had looked at the kitchen remodeling project and had said that the required higher ceilings as well as the extended addition could be done with pole building construction. He reportedly “just threw out a figure of $40,000,” which is well over the Chamber’s budget. Starkel has requested a written bid that breaks the job into components so that the group can select those things that must be professionally provided and that fit within the project budget.

Starkel added that she was able to purchase a dishwasher and oven from the VFW, at a significant savings.

Jennifer Martin distributed a report from a meeting between Chamber president Marlon Schafer, local property owners and the FSA in regard to a new rule which will potentially put a halt to the Stumpjumper Motorcycle Club’s White Knuckle race in early spring. The rule apparently states that a 100-yard buffer is required between ORV race sites and property that has been placed in the CRP program.

Martin reported that, even though no resolution was reached at the meeting, FSA representatives said that they were willing to consider any modifications proposed.
