Public works building gets a new look

The lengthy remodeling project at Odessa’s public works building is nearing completion, with the recent addition of cement board siding and shakes.

The project, which has been done in stages over a period of approximately two years, was spearheaded by Mayor Doug Plinski, who also was the impetus behind the recent community center facelift.

This project will be something of a facelift as well, as the siding has been applied only to the sides of the building that face the street.

A complete re-roofing was the first stage of the renovation, as the old roof was leaking badly. Other additions have been new bay doors and man doors, energy-efficient windows, and a remodel of the restroom, making it accessible to wheelchairs.

Next on the agenda will be painting, which will help the building blend in with the other nearby public offices.

The public works building has had an eventful life, having served as a gas/service station, an automobile dealership (twice), and a service station/tire dealer. It was purchased by the town approximately 20 years ago and has served as the public works department’s headquarters since. It also serves as the youth garten venue during Deutschesfest.

The renovation was done without grant funding, according to town clerk Linda Burghard. She reported that the only money received for the project was in the form of incentives and/or rebates.
