Odessa Record subscriber Larry Fisher of Spokane continues his series of articles on the history of the Batum/Lauer area (where his wife, the former Joyce Kiesz, grew up).

Hi, here I am again.

In 1961, prior to graduation from Washington State College-University, Joyce and I would visit her parents, sister and brother-in-law, Robert "Bob" Monroe in Odessa and out at Batum, her brother - Gordon, his wife - Margie, their children - Mike and Vickie.

Occasionally as we passed through Odessa heading out to Batum, we would notice the following:

Eagles Stag Crab Feed, - Given by the Odessa Arie No. 3069, Fraternal Order of Eagles, starting at 8:00 sharp. Entertainment, refreshments provided. Tickets $2.50. (1955 02-10). Lyric Theatre, - Saturday and Sunday, Matinee Sunday 2:00 to 4:00 "Teacher's Pet" - very good comedy in Vista Vision, sparkling, wholesome. Clark Gable, Doris Day, Gig Young plus Cartoon. (1958 08-21).

Smith's Cafe - open on Sunday, "smorgasbord" only - Menu - Roast Tom Turkey, cold cuts, deviled eggs, golden brown fried fish with hot sauce, sage dressing, mashed potatoes, giblet gravy, hot rolls, royal fruit salad, peanut slaw salad, potato salad, macaroni salad relishes and appetizers all for $1.50, eat all you want! (1960, 09-22).

After graduation, we noticed the following:

Fode's Market (U.S. Inspected meats) - Grand Opening - Free drawing at 4:00 p.m. Do not have to be present to win. Prizes - Hind Quarter of Beef - Hams - Turkeys. Free coffee and doughnuts served. Free corsages to first 100 ladies, balloons for the kids. Custom cutting. Your meat will be wrapped in the best plastic lined freezer paper with waxed paper between each steak and then sharp frozen to keep the flavor in. Come in and see Don's cooler and freezer. Store hours 8 to 12, 1 to 6. Some meat prices are - Bar-S Franks, 1 lb. pkg. 49 cents. United, whole or half Hams, 49 cents per lb., sliced free. Pederson's, 3 lbs. and up, fresh Fryers, 35 cents per lb. Fresh Fish! Fresh Pacific Oysters, 59 cents per Jar. Armour's Star Thick Sliced Bacon, $1.10 per 2 lb. pkg. (10/5/1963).

State Officers Reception Dance, VFW Hall, Sat. night - Music by Rocky Coulee Ramblers - Members and their accompanying guests. (1964, 02-20).

Odessa Lanes, Inc. open bowling every weekday and weekends from 12 noon. Adults - per line, 45 cents tax incl., Students per line, 35 cents tax incl. (1965).
