School District gets trophy for Kira Powell achievement

A trophy has been awarded to the Odessa School District in recognition of the advanced scientific work of Kira Powel, her mentor/teacher Jeff Wehr and the school itself for its support for her science research. The accompanying letter reads as follows:

“Enclosed is a trophy to honor and recognize the achievements of Kira Powell. Kira competed in research paper competition at the 50th National Junior Science & Humanities Symposium, May 2012, and won top honors for research on ‘The Development of a Novel Sodium Polyacrylate Seed Treatment.’

The trophy is a token of our appreciation for the inspiration, commitment and excellence in teaching scientific inquiry, as demonstrated through your student’s achievement. Thank you for preparing your students for participation in JSHS. We recognize the significant effort and time dedicated by the school and the teacher in preparing future STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics] talent for competition. But we believe that these activities offer critical areas to motivate, challenge and inspire students and bring credit to the high school for high standards in academic excellence.

Again, thank you for your support of the Junior Science & Humanties Symposia (JSHS) program and congratulations for a job well done. We look forward to our continuing association with your institution.

Sincerely,

Doris E. Cousens, Director

NJSH Symposium”
