Serving Lincoln County for more than a century!
Work has begun on the next phase of the community kitchen upgrade, and the storage areas that were on the north side of the kitchen have been demolished. Asphalt from the existing concrete pad out to the end of the building has been broken up in preparation for removal. Michelle Melgren reported that the $10,000 rural development grant awarded by the Lincoln County Economic Development Council has been received.
Rod Webster, who has been working on the kitchen project, said that his next concern is to get someone in to do the plumbing before October 15, which is when the building contractor is scheduled to start. Webster added that he won’t need much help from volunteers until the pole addition is up and the concrete slab is ready to be poured.
President Marlon Schafer said that an inspection of the Christmas lights has revealed that they are beginning to show signs of deterioration. He has ordered a sample of an LED fixture that he hopes to use as a prototype to upgrade the decorations.
Schafer also reported that Odessa mayor Doug Plinski had asked the Chamber to look into replacing the banners that were installed on 1st Avenue light poles at one time. A total of 27 poles were fitted with rods to hold the banners, but only a handful of banners remain. Several of the rods are now also missing. Schafer presented some information on the cost of replacing the banners, and suggested that there might be other alternatives, such as lightweight metal signs that could be installed in place of the banners.
The group then discussed several items dealing with the promotion of Odessa, ranging from the need for new postcards and brochures, distribution possibilities for “This is Odessa” around the region and complementary subscriptions of The Odessa Record to various large employers in surrounding communities.
The next Chamber of Commerce meeting will be held Tuesday, Oct. 23 at Any Occasion Banquet Hall at noon.
